This review may express unpopular views. I write my reviews for myself, so I can remember what I read – and it doesn’t make any sense to lie to myself. The Thirds series started off strong for me, but the last 3 books took a bit of a downturn. I was going to give Darkest Hour Before Dawn 3 stars – but it would have been out of some weird sense of series loyalty. DHBD was…. Meh. It was a chore to get through. I was happy when it ended. In short…. I did not enjoy it.This installment focused on the Seb Hobbes and Dr. Hudson Colbourn pairing and I went into the story with a sense of trepidation as neither caught my interest as secondary characters in previous installments. And as anticipated their characters and romance were lukewarm. I just did not connect with the characters at all. Their romance seemed more stereotypical M/F as opposed to M/M in terms of their characterization with Hudson being the more effeminate character and Hobbes being the gentle giant perfect gentleman. This may not be fair but a personal pet peeve of mine is anyone calling their significant other “Darling” with a straight face. The fact that Hudson is British unfortunately doesn’t cut him any slack. It also didn’t help that I didn’t particularly like Hudson…. I thought….there’s no way around it….I thought he was an idiot; and I have a low tolerance for idiots.Which brings us to the main relationship conflict. I get that trauma is stressful for couples and can push people apart. But the whole premise behind the Seb and Hudson separation is…. ridiculous (and perpetuated by Hudson which increased my frustration with him). On some level it felt contrived, but if you take it at face value – then I must conclude that Hudson is an idiot. A lot of DHBD felt contrived. Seb and Hudson reconnecting and then Bam! – in the middle of the grocery store – the psychotic Mrs. Palmer. Sorry for your loss and all, but seriously? Blaming Hudson and Seb makes absolutely no sense based on the facts presented. None. And then the series of events pulling Seb and Hudson into TIN. What was Seb thinking? Who would do that knowing the consequences; or if you are going to do that – then you don’t leave any evidence (aka body). So now it’s either contrived or Seb is acting like an idiot too.The sad reality is that I read DHBD is a state of either perpetual annoyance or boredom. The only highlight was the cool Wolf reveal.

I have waited for Seb and Hudson's book forever! The readers of Charlie Cochet's THIRDS series have known the former Delta leader (Seb) and the medical examiner's (Hudson) story since book one. We knew something terrible happened, and they broke up because of it. But, we didn't know the extent of their back story, and what the breakup did to each man. We find out how each has coped without the other half of their soul, and the toll each man suffered living without their mate. I was delighted to see Dex and Sloane, Ash and Cael, Calvin and Hobbs, their sergeant, Tony, and the big boss Sparks. Austin also makes a brief appearance, coming out of nowhere, then silently disappearing, as always. I laughed with the banter of Dex and his team. I cried reliving the heartbreak of the child's death. My heart was warmed watching the love shared between Hudson and Seb trying to rekindle. We also see the strength of Seb, Hobbs, and Rafe's parents. Their bond is unbreakable, and we see the example of commitment to each other their children grew up with. No wonder the children all grew up to be tenacious lovers. Their parents laid the ground work, and provided the example to which all their relationships could be held against. In short, this book lived up to every one of my expectations, and then took me on such a wild left turn, I was shocked and stunned at the latest development happening at the end of the book. My favorite part in the book was seeing Hudson's wolf play with Seb's tiger. In their Therian forms, they are able to be free, and express the affection between mates they are unable to in their human forms. If you love the THIRDS series, and are ready for the next step in the evolution of the story, this book is a must read. New characters are introduced, and old ones are revisited. Charlie Cochet is a master world builder, and you will be happy to revisit the entire team of Destructive Delta Force.

As I was reading this, I kept thinking to myself, "Maybe it's time for this series to end."This book focuses on Seb and Hudson. I really didn't like Hudson in this book, maybe that's why I got tired of reading this. Yes, Hudson keeps pulling away, and drawing close, and pulling away, etc. He has an epiphany, bring on the happy ending. We are left with a cliffhanger/reveal which if you've been paying attention at all in the series is really easy to figure out--especially in this book. So....the reveal packed no punch for me.I really LOVED the first few books in the series, but then I had a hard time when the focus veered off of Dex and Sloane. Sue me, they're my favorite couple in the series. Maybe there are too many conspiracies or plot lines, but I just kinda stopped caring and was only reading the book to finish it. That makes me kinda sad, you know?Still, this one had a plot as opposed to the last book. I'm not sure how many more books Cochet has planned in this series, but if it's more than one, I'm not sure I'll finish it out if it's similar to this one.
