About the Author

Francisco Jiménez emigrated from Tlaquepaque, Mexico, to California, where he worked for many years in the fields with his family. He received both his master's degree and his Ph.D. from Columbia University and is now the professor emeritus in the Modern Languages and LiteratureDepartment at Santa Clara University, the setting of much of his novel, Reaching Out. He is the award-winning author of The Circuit, Cajas de carton, Breaking Through, Senderos fronterizos, Mas Alla de mi, Taking Hold, The Christmas Gift/El Regalo de la Navidad and La Mariposa. I bought *Breaking Through* without realizing that it was a sequel to *The Circuit*. Nonetheless, you aren't lost if you start with *Breaking Through* I loved this memoir because it was one of the best portrayal of a migrant family.This memoir chronicled the life of Francisco Jimenez from the time that him and his family entered America from Mexico to his entrance into college.The Jimenez family saved up some money and entered into Mexico illegally. They were soon caught, after a time, and deported back. However, they were able to get papers and return. Despite living in the land of freedom and opportunities, the family has to work hard in order to survive. They worked in strawberry fields, lettuce patches and cleaned buildings.Francisco is loving school yet struggled to stay on top as he also has to work. His older brother did well in school but worked nearly as much as their often-ill father did. The mother stayed home and took care of the children. However, she often substituted in their work when needed.*Breaking Through* is a story of a family working together. It's also a story of one finding one's own identity in America. It's also a story of one trying to achieve the American dream.You'll laugh. You'll cry. If you don't understand the Mexican culture, you'll find yourself puzzled at some things. Coming from a Hispanic family, I found myself nodding and taking strolls in memory lane.Overall, it's easy reading for a great book.

Even though I had never heard of Francisco Jimenez or his story, I really enjoyed reading this book! It was full of detail and depth, explaining every inch of Francisco Jiménez’s life from the time his family escaped Mexico to the time he left his home for college. Francisco explained how his family was caught by the border patrol, how he and his brother Roberto were deported, and then how he snuck back in to the states (with papers).Francisco did a great job of explaining his family members and the way they interacted. I thought it was so interesting that his father couldn’t speak English, so Francisco made it his job to translate. His descriptions also made me think about how hard it was that his father couldn’t work very often because of chronic back pain. Francisco took a lot of responsibility to work for the family. I wonder how often that might happen today.Francisco wrote about his experience working as a janitor after school with Roberto to earn money for their room and board and food for their family. Francisco was actually happy to have a job as a janitor. It was better than the thinning lettuce and picking carrots he always had to do at the army barracks where he lived. He had a lot on his plate trying to support his family, make extra money, have friends (not easy with language and cultural barriers), go to school, get good grades, and get into college--with a scholarship. He also talked about people treating him differently because of his race.The book was full of interesting details and was very easy to follow and understand. I am only in the sixth grade but I still felt this story was a fast and good read. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes to read—especially true and inspiring stories. I will not take my life as an American citizen for granted, which is why I think he probably wrote his story to begin with. It was a great book.

I actually went to Santa Clara University when I had to read this book and Professor Jimenez was teaching, (just not my class at the time)This is an amazing book. You'd think it'd be so simple, since its for intermediate Spanish classes (I used this in conjunction with reading the Spanish version for my Spanish class) and it helped a LOT.Simply a great, heart-wrenching novel that you'll fall in love with. I still related to it and I'm not a first-generation immigrant child or anything. I thought the family aspects and personal development in the story were great and I learned a lot of Spanish reading this too. There isn't a whole lot of difficult or ridiculous vocabulary in it either.Hope this helps,Daniel

Once started, could not put down. True stories about a migrant family working in California during the 50's, seen through the eyes of a teen. This is the continuation of The Circuit, stories of when the child was young. This pulled at my heartstrings!

Bought all 3 books - important historical events that are pertinent today with immigrant children - not aliens! Empowered my students and gives one a real experience of someone who came across illegally and is now a PhD at a university!

Just read this with my 7th graders and it touched them very much! They wrote letters to the author - very genuine and heartfelt. A beautiful tribute to the human element in the issues of immigration, Mexican American farm workers in California and the power of prayer and persistence. Everyone - especially California kids- should read this autobiography

I listened to the audio version of this book, which I feel is extremely powerful since the narrarator can say words I am not familiar with in Spanish. You almost feel as if you are experiencing the troubles that Panchito experiences. I read this to my class, which mostly consists of children immigrated from Mexico, with households that Spanish is the primary language. The kids went bananas while listening to words they know that the teacher didn't know. Stories of all sorts came to light and descriptive writing came to life. Try this book as well as The Circuit (I like this one best though). If you don't speak Spanish fluently I recommend the audio versions.

An easy read. A great guideline for teens and how they can be what they want to be.

Andrew Carnegie was a major steel industrialist in the late 1800s, up there with the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts. Carnegie established Carnegie Steel, which later became U.S. Steel. He retired in 1901 amassing a huge fortune, and then became a philanthropist. In doing so, he composed a series of essays on how one should handle wealth once he has acquired it, the most famous of these being "The Gospel of Wealth," the title of this books. However, other essays are included, all relating to the same topic, so they are consistent with one another. The book would have been ideal for the people of "Occupy Wall Street," and by facebook, I tried to recommend it. I hope, if and when the movement reemerges, they will take it into consideration. I highly recommend it. The very first thing I would like to point out is that this is NOT a Socialist doctrine, nor does it relate to that concept in any way, shape, or form. Those who feel that it is have missed the point entirely. Those of every persuasion need to read this book. One might ask that if this is not Socialist, or Communist, then what is it? What you will find by reading this may surprise you. First of all, Carnegie warns of the rich spoiling their children, leaving them unearned wealth as inheritance, and leaving them their business simply because they are their children, but without any qualifications. The first can spoil and destroy them, not knowing what to do with their unearned wealth by basking in luxury. The second is that should he leave his children to head his established business, whatever it might be, they have a chance of destroying it by not knowing how to run it, and lacking the creativity to let it grow. The children must be educated and trained to run the business, to have an interest in it, and to want it to grow beyond what the founder, their fathers, have established. Also, children must learn the value of the dollar and earn their way up. If they are not qualified, the business, and wealth, should be left to someone else. A warning to the businessmen of today. The main topic here, though, is to use the wealth to benefit society as a whole, and this is needed today, in times of economic crisis and debts, more than ever. This does not mean giving money to any person who has his hand out. Carnegie did not believe in handouts, or a welfare state. Everyone, he believed, must work for a living, unless severely disabled. Carnegie did recommend giving to charities that help the less fortunate. He also advised to be selective about what charities to support. The book does warn against scams, and this is especially true today as it was back then. The way to use wealth to benefit society would be to contribute what society needs or could use to benefit the public. If a town doesn't have a library, one should donate and build one with his own money, not the government's. This could apply to community centers, public swimming pools, parks, walkways, bike paths, and today, since the government is short on cash, roads and bridges. By this, I mean that if a wealthy man owning a business or corporation lives in a small town that needs a new bridge or roadway or other form of infrastructure, perhaps he should donate and built it himself to benefit the town, rather than wait for the government to do it. This is a problem in our society today, depending to the government to supply all our needs, and this is why we are in such massive debt. Other ways are to build hospitals, invest in research and development in new technologies, and new products that will make society as a whole even more prosperous. Education is a major investment, in college and universities, as are new academic disciplines. Greed is no doubt prevalent in our society today, and that is a major problem. Many businessmen acquire unearned wealth at the expense of others, and hoard it away, only to acquire more. When taken into consideration, these people cannot even begin to spend the money they have, and they want more, more, more, only to let it sit on its ass. This is a big problem in this country and this explains our crisis. In other countries, many take the money and reinvest it. That is what we need to do if we are to get this country moving again. In spite of the debt, the U.S. has a lot of money, just sitting there in a vault doing nothing. Should all that money be reinvested in new industries, new technology, education, new products, this country as a whole would rise again as a major world power. This would also produce even more wealth. We are declining right now, but we have the money to pull us out if we use it wisely. This book, these essays were written in the early twentieth century, around 1910, but the book, and its meaning, is timeless. This is a book that should be in every business office, big and small, from Wall Street to Main Street. This book is truly a "Gospel of Wealth" for it warns of the dangers of wealth if use foolishly, but also extolls the benefits if used wisely. Andrew Carnegie's most famous contribution of his donations is the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City. He has also donated libraries to towns across the U.S., and pipe organs to churches all over the world, at their own request after hearing to one he donated in Scotland, when he retired. He also left an inheritance for his children to live out the rest of their lives comfortably, but stopped there. His grandchildren had to start over again, much to their benefit. This is a short book consisting of seven essays, but they all go together, as a few more essays from other compilations Carnegie has written. His works should be revived for all to read, for these are classics well worth reading, and remembering.

A short read (a very short read) but a good one!

Andrew Carnegie was a saint; he made a lot of money legitimately and even more legitimately decided it was his (Christian) obligation to distribute his wealth to have-nots-- conspicuously in the bequeathal to libraries which dot the American continent (including this Louisville from which I write.)I read this book from the perspective of a pauper; while I do not have a great material wealth to distribute to a world, I have my poverty for its reasons. The take home message for me was: IF CARNEGIE CAN ASSUME THAT HIS RICHES ARE A GIFT, AND GIVE BACK, THEN I CAN GIVE THE GIFTS OF MY SITUATION TO A WORLD ALSO. What 'I have a lot of' is no-money and schizophrenia (the bane of my family); I can turn around this abundance in a responsible way and through responsible husbanding write my testament-in-blood to a perhaps less than loving world.So I thank Mr. Carnegie, and take home my message about how I must give back my gift (poverty and psychosis-management) as my GOSPEL, by the changes of change.--Vernon Lynn Stephens

Very nice quick read!

Many of the ideas in this book are being used today as we see Waren Buffet, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerburg giving away their wealth to society.

This book is for the Zuckerbergs, Gates, etc. on how they should be spending their wealth. For me, it was just a good read providing some real contrast to how Carnegie accumulated his wealth, much from 'ill gotten gains.'

COURTING HER HIGHNESS is a dense, rich character study of three women whose lives were dramatically intertwined. It is a story of friendship, love, loyalty, betrayal, power, politics, and the struggle to find one's place in this world and in history. I found it a joy to read, absorbing, satisfying, and entertaining. Even thought-provoking and fun.I've read a ton of novels about the Stuarts, but Mary and Anne both have always been overshadowed: both by their male ancestors, and Mary by William, Anne by Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough. Of course, Sarah would steamroll over anyone!I found this to be one of Jean Plaidy's most satisfying novels. She balances her time with each leading lady: Anne, Sarah, and the clever, retiring, long-suffering Abigail Masham, so that the novel works as a showcase of all three personalities. Each woman is dynamic and fascinating in their own way. I haven't seen Anne portrayed so positively anywhere else. And Abigail has, until I read this novel, always been a simple footnote in the greater drama of Anne and Sarah.Plaidy writes what seems to be honest portrayal of each woman's faults and strengths, ambitions, fears, and frustrations. The men in their lives, though loved, were as often as not pawns in their ploy for power (Marlborough) taken for granted (Samuel Masham) or adored but without influence (Prince George). These women wielded their own formidable power and influence at a time when a woman's power usually came from sex. Sarah and Abigail were Queen Anne's "Favourites" like Charles Ii's Barbara Palmer, Nelly Gwynne, Louse de Keroualle et al, or her father's (less influential) Katherine Sedley. Indeed there was an element of sex in their complex relationships, but it wasn't their ticket to the privy chamber as it was with their predecessors. They are unique in the history of British monarchs.And clearly, a monarch's favorite companions, duchess or chambermaid, actress or courtier, were extremely powerful, as Plaidy demonstrates. They could make or break anyone, even men far above their rank. But through her character study of Anne, Plaidy carefully demonstrates that ultimately, the queen was boss, the woman history has painted as a fat and complacent cow. Queen Anne had guts, not just a gut, and I loved reading about her.Sarah Churchill is also simply awe-inspiring. She's one of history's most famous capital-b-Bitches, to be perfectly frank, and she seems to deserve that reputation. She is endlessly fun to read about, the more outrageous, the better. A baddie you love to hate, not unlike Barbara Palmer. Though My Lady Castlemaine actually sounds like the friendlier of the two. Whew. I digress.Abigail Masham was incredibly clever and resilient, despite swimming with sharks. Perhaps not so much clever as instead more.. . I'm blanking. Careful, wise, patient but ambitious nonetheless. . . Plaidy helped me finally understand how she became a Favourite and remained one. I trust that her influence in Robert Harley's career was not fiction on Plaidy's part, nor her quiet, plausible Jacobite sympathies and influence on Anne in that arena. The full extent, of course, is conjecture, but clearly researched.I also found the little Duke of Gloucester, Anne's only child to survive past infancy, only to die at eleven, to be an incredibly charming, adorable, endearing fellow. I loved reading about him. It's no wonder his mama and papa were so smitten and proud!I've read one other novel about Anne and Sarah, with very little Abigail Duchess: A Novel of Sarah Churchill. Narrated by Sarah herself, it's a great companion for Plaidy's older novel (previously published as The Queen's Favourites, why the title change?) of course I like Sarah at her worst, as she is here in Courting Her Highness. There's also the non-fiction biography Sarah Churchill: Duchess of Marlborough: The Queen's Favourite. You can probably tell Sarah's a favourite of mine, too.This book is a deliciously wicked portrayal of Sarah Churchill that's quite fun. At the same time it manages to convey the struggles of poor dear Anne. One wonders why she was so, so clingy and desperate for friendship, but I also greatly empathize with her: we both value friendships as sacred, deep bonds of love and loyalty. It can make one's heart sadly vulnerable.Ultimately though, I'd say this is Abigail's book. As much as an ensemble piece as it is, highlighting all three women, Abigail's character performs much like she did in real life, always quietly in the background, never far from the action. She has an Everywoman quality, not having grown up at court, that draws the reader to see most comfortably through her eyes, of the three.Fans of historical fiction will easily gobble this up. Jean Plaidy, who wrote gothic romance under the name Victoria Holt and historical romance as Phillipa Carr, is strikingly prolific in her work on the British monarchy (prolific in general!) I recommend her series on Queen Victoria. Her books are currently enjoying rediscovery as they are rereleased. What a joy!

Historical novels are readable forms of quasi-history, palatable history courses for readers who like a spiced up view of the past. JP specializes in English history focusing on the Crown and members of the Court, all of whom either wielded power or wished to, never certain if they could achieve it or how long they could hold on to it. Raw power was the menu of the day and for readers of later generations has always provided a rich source for story-telling. Life, death, money, sex, intrigue......all of that and all the time. Her books fill very satisfactorily readers' appetites for this kind of history lesson. I found some unnecessary repetition and some dialogue a little manufactured. Still it was fun to read if not quite up to the quality of at least two other authors of a similar venue, both of whom have received awards for their wok.

I have actually read this book twice. I wish I had known the historical sequence of Jean Plaidy's books. Since I read this one first in the Stuart series, I reread it after I finished some of the other books. The manner in which little unobtrusive Abigail Hill weans the emotional dependence of Anne from the flamboyant Sarah Churchill who had been her closest friend since childhood and becomes a factor in the politics of England is impressive. I actually looked up the history of the era, and these people are all historical figures and did what Jean Plaidy says they did. Plaidy's colorful writing puts flesh on the old historical bones.

Queen Anne has been upstaged by the more flamboyant Stuarts like Charles I (her grandfather) and Charles II (her uncle) and all the Tudors. But she was well -meaning and honest and although a woman easily influenced, albeit stubborn, her rule reflected a prosperous England,Anne gets upstaged in this historical novel, too, by one Abigail Hill and by Sarah Churchill. Abigail is an impovershed relation, a cousin, of Lady Marlborough (Sarah Churchill)and Sarah secures a place for Abigail in Princess Anne's household because she is ashamed of having a poor relative.As Sarah blatantly manipulates the Princess, Abigail as Mistress of the Wardrobe quietly goes about winning Anne's affection and trust. (Abigail and Sarah rather remind me of Jane Seymour versus Anne Boleyn).The interesting thing is Abigail is just as manipulting of Queen Anne as Sarah, but much more tactful(Jane Seymour).Abigail very likely loved Anne, Sarah emphatically did not.Anne's loss of her only surviving child, the eleven year old Duke of Gloucester,is very touching in the book. Because she is emotionally vulnerable, the stage is set for a sympathetic listener and Abigail provides the ballast Anne needs. One wonders how Anne withstood the horror of seventeen aborted pregnancies.When William of Orange, the King and husband of Anne's long-dead sister Mary dies, Anne inherits the throne. Her husband, George of Denmark remains a prince and not a king as he is the queen consort. George is insignificant and wafts in and out of the novel, mostly eating and sleeping. Anne adores him.Anne favors moderate Tory politicians who share her High Church Anglican views.She also reinstates the touch of the king's evil, a practise in which the ruler touches the necks of people suffering from scrofula, a type of tuberculosis resulting in lesions and swellings of the lymph nodes. "The king's Evil" is the name of the disease.Anne's reign is one of artistic, literary and economic prosperity. Although Daniel Defoe is pilloried for his ruthless attacks on the hypocrisy of the High Church Tories, he is so popular with the masses that they refrain from throwing garbage at him while he is confined to the pillory.They threw flowers instead. Defoe is a very prolific writer, his most famous work being, of course, "Robinson Crusoe."He has his fingers in many pies reflecting liveliness of thought during Anne's reign. Jonathan Swift is a prodigious writer at this time as well.Anne will dismiss her Whig ministers and her relationship with the Whig supporter Sarah Churchill sours. Eventually she will be denied all access to the Queen. Meanwhile Abigail, who had long since married the Prince's attendant Samuel Masham, grows in power and influence over the Queen, meticulously remains in her proper place as a subject even when her husband is awarded a peerage.Sarah outlives Queen Anne, the Duke of Marlborough her husband and Abigail Masham. Finally dying at age eighty, this virago is not mourned by a soul."Courting her Highness" is a fine read although the historical novel gets a bit too ponderous at times.

Not a lot has been written about Queen Anne of England. This is an interesting tale of the rise and fall of Sarah Churchill and her relationship with the Queen. Fans of English history will enjoy this book.
