'Learning ASP.NET 2.0 with AJAX: A Practical Hands-on Guide' is another gem of a book by heavy technology author Jesse Liberty et al.. If you know about recent web advances over the last couple of years you know about AJAX which has revolutionized the Web 2.0 world, allowing for real apps to be made on the web. The user doesn't have to wait wait wait any more, as they can make decision/choices and get the feedback that they are expecting right away. AJAX technology basically splits pages up into "virtual divs" where instead of displayed content being control, handshakes and communication behind the scenes is what is modified. Early AJAX code was a bit flaky but Microsoft has made things easier with their ASP.NET AJAX set of controls and classes. In order to learn how to use these tools the user needed a book that laid things out in a logical fashion and did so in a tight, useful package, this book is the result!!This ~500 page book is broken up in the following way:01. I admit that just knowing Jesse Liberty wrote a particular book makes me want to read it. I just bought it, even though it addresses an older version of the .Net framework, because I knew I'd learn something. I am trying to add Ajax to my applications, and the books out there are a real mixed bag. I figured Mr. Liberty wouldn't let me down, and I was mostly right.I usually read technical books by putting the Kindle for PC screen up on one monitor and working along with the book on the other. This book is so well-written and easy to read that I carried it around with me and read it like a novel. Some of it was old hat to me, since I am an experienced ASP.Net programmer, but I still learned a thing or two that will help me out a lot. Jesse Liberty has a way of explaining things that demystifies them, and the examples in the book build on one another clearly and effectively. By the end of it, you have a working site that implements a lot of useful ASP.Net stuff. My biggest complaint is that there wasn't more Ajax in it. That was a bit misleading. Mostly it is good old server-side ASP.Net programming. I would like to see this author produce a work specifically aimed at ASP.Net developers who want to add jQuery and Ajax to their sites. That's a book I'd buy for the Kindle AND on paper.

Usually the big problems I see in coding books have very little to do with the quality of the code and very much to do with care (or its lack) in pacing and organization. The result here is a book that thinks through and accounts for the questions beginners will have.The authors direct themselves to developers asking the question "What is the quickest way for me to build real Web applications with the least handcoding?" They stick to that so closely, anyone worrying about the VB versus C# thing should not feel any hesitation on that account in getting this book.The examples use Visual Studio or its free counterpart, Visual Web Developer. An appendix guides you through their installation and configuration, as well as that of SQL Express.The book has a nice addition for the serious student: each chapter has a quiz and exercises -- with the answers provided in the back of the book.§

Luca Dal Monte was born in Cremona, Italy, in 1963, and currently resides in Milano, Italy. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, he is an award-winning and best-selling author who has written or co-authored ten books on motorsports. There have been many biographies written about Italian auto magnate Enzo Ferrari, but this is likely to be the one that ranks at the top. Published in Italy last year as "Ferrari Rex", it has already won at least one Book of the Year award over there. Its 954 pages include an excellent 40-page index and copious footnotes, found at the end of each chapter, confirming that the author did a lot of research and interviewed a lot of people. The result is a complex yet readable biography of a very complex man. The translation is more than adequate (though the identity of the translator is not divulged) and the text is large enough to be easily readable. There are 64 pages of photos in 4 inserts, and they are well-selected and captioned. This is a book that belongs on the bookshelf of anyone interested in Ferrari's cars and racing efforts.

I am already 109 pages in to this massive book and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. At the rate I am going I'll be through it by month end. That tells you it's an easy read and it's captivating. Given that it's a translation from the original Italian, that's hugely in its favor. Dal Monte undertook the research, the data sorting, the double checking, and then the writing; each one of those tasks is a lifetime's work by itself even with back-up from his publisher. After over 60 years as a car enthusiast who spends every spare moment deep reading across the spectrum I find myself addicted to this book. Each page is a teaching moment, an amusing anecdote and/or a reminder of something I had long since forgotten or never knew in the beginning.if you have enquiring mind, albeit with a Ferrari bias, pick up a copy and drink deep into this entertaining personal diary - also as an Italian political, industrial and social history and a Ferrari, and its competitors, business history - that reads at the speed of an Italian detective novel.Love Enzo, or hate him, you'll understand him having read this book. If nothing else.Buy it. You'll love it. It's masterful.

Yet another Enzo Ferrari book, this time it's over 900 pages. I really did not have any appetite for another retelling of Enzo Ferrari, after all I started my Ferrari readings since 1958, with collapsing shelves of glossy Ferrari books. However, I also been disappointed with the lack of in-depth studies of the man in the English language. So once more I took the bait and purchased this copy. When it arrived, I was impressed with it's relative lack of glossies, then I read where Luca Dal Monte graduated from Kentucky Well, this book is definitely different from the norm, all positives to me. What I learned from Dal Monte are the all important details of Ferrari's pre-Alfa days, his private failed ventures, his Alfa Romeo years, and his marriage, which all helped shaped Enzo Ferrari to be the familiar post WWII figure we know of. Those earlier exposures defined how Ferrari dealt with the 1961 'palace revolt', termination of Ford take-over and the consummate sporting politician. This is an easy and the most rewarding Ferrari read of my life, only wish it came sooner than 60 year from the start.

It is not often that one has the opportunity to look over the shoulder of as mythic a figure as Enzo Ferrari throughout his extraordinary life. Luca Dal Monte had an advantage, that he shares with us, of having access to Enzo's detailed daily journal entries, as well as being an author determined to meticulously seek out whatever other sources might be available to capture this remarkable life dedicated to racing, yes, but also the life of a husband, father, friend, leader and citizen contending with Italian fascist government restrictions and communist strikes while competing against the giants of the International Grand Prix racing world. To convey the full picture in all its complexity takes a full 912 pages, which might seem daunting - until we begin to read and cannot put the book down. If you love cars or racing, buy the book.
