R&W worry that robotic drones, being cheaper and easier than conventional forces might lead to more interventions and war. Ability to strike more precisely at lower cost will lower the threshold for war. They don't subscribe to the alarmist fantasies in many space scenarios, especially when drones are able to independently choose targets and when to kill. On the positive side they are more directed than say gas attacks bio, chemical and WMD, lessening collateral damage and loss of life. Internet hacking and DoS attacks don't kill, leaving the possibility of engaging in cyber-wars without death and destruction. However, new kinds of weapons creates the possibility of new kinds of abuse.International law, separating civilian targets from military, becomes complicated as R&W examine in detail effects of new technology on the Lieber code, Geneva Convention and Additional Protocols AP I and AP II. They point out that in practice war seldom conforms to new codes. Attacks on civilian targets, especially at sea are surprisingly easy to justify on a basis of military self defense. Legal constraints are likely misguided.

If you're looking for a well-reasoned, factual analysis of a highly relevant topic you won't find it in this book. Instead, you will find a thinly veiled political diatribe that takes broad-sweeping swipes against unspecified "critics" and "international lawyers" based upon an historically inaccurate and overly rigid view of international law. While the authors encourage the reader to "think anew" they fail to follow their own platitude. Rather, reaching back to the era of gunboat diplomacy and resurrecting the Bush Doctrine of unilateralism, they argue that technology offers the road to security through the increased use of precise, unilateral attacks to coerce U.S. adversaries. This approach of peace through force, however, is only possible if we restructure the international legal system to free the US from unfair rules imposed upon it by an anti-West establishment. Unfortunately, in the process of playing the hegemonic power victim card, the authors ignore or gloss over facts that don't fit their argument, choosing instead to rely upon rhetoric, revisionism and yawning leaps in logic. Certainly, this book will resonate with those who embrace the message, but will leave all critical thinkers frustrated with its failure to deliver on a promising title.

The book provides excellent legal analysis and commentary, but also provides interesting examples. Entertaining and smart.

Brilliant! Progressive thinking!

If dealing with a challenge to your established views is really part of your life-time learning plan, then read “Striking Power….” The “law of war,” past, present, and future will raise the most important of issues and offer proposals that will remain with you when, as citizen or policy maker, you are confronted with the dilemma of “what can and should” America do in matters of national life and death:Warfare, in every imaginable form.

From School Library Journal

Toddler-PreS—Leo (of Lola Reads to Leo fame) loves the water. In preparation for an upcoming swim class, the toddler and his dad read a book that gives a nod to Eric Carle's Mister Seahorse, then head off to the pool for baby/parent swim time. The families represented are of multiple ethnicities. At swim class, the children learn how to kick and splash, and Leo gets a fun ride on his daddy's back. Many children have loved other stories by McQuinn that feature Leo's older sister Lola (Lola Loves Stories), and this offering is no less delightful. Hearson's colorful acrylic illustrations are as fun and playful as the text. VERDICT A solid choice for preschool storytime or one-on-one sharing, especially to introduce a swim class or lesson.—Jennifer Steib Simmons, Anderson County Library, SC

Review

Kirkus ReviewsLeo is back (Leo Loves Baby Time, 2014, etc.), and now he happily attends a community swim class with Daddy. "Leo loves the water. He is like a little fish!" A smiling Leo is in sudsy bath water, his dark, curly head and brown body held up by a pair of strong, brown, adult arms. As the story continues, readers see Leo and Daddy interact lovingly throughout, from sitting together on a big chair—viewing a swim-class brochure—to changing into proper swim attire in the locker room and taking part in a class that features a pool full of other happy baby-and-adult pairs. The range of skin and hair types is commendable, even including one adult-child combination of nonmatching skin. Getting used to the off-center noses of the babies requires a little time—probably more for adults than children. The text has some sentences that will sound delightful to little ears as little eyes view the water babies: "They swish and swoosh. They splish and sploosh." The tender and competent care given to Leo by his father is reason enough to praise this book. Also, like its predecessor, the codex itself has rounded corners and strong, resilient paper to accommodate its audience. The ending is a bit abrupt, but it parallels babies' and toddlers' tendencies to play hard and suddenly run out of energy. A welcome addition to the toddler bookshelf.School Library JournalLeo (of Lola Reads to Leo fame) loves the water. My baby boy loves the Leo books. He's only 2 months but he really engages and looks at the books as I read it to him. I know he will continue to enjoy these book as he gets older. As a parent, I love that the book is simple and colorful but describes activities babies might engage in. I also love that each book has pictures of many different children of all colors and a main character that looks like him. And the illustrations are great! The hardcover version even has child-friendly pages that don't tear even though they are not hard. I know there are the Lola books too but I wish there were more Leo books.

Simple book that I bought to prepare my 1yr old for swim class. It did it's job! Every night before class she wanted to read the book. Now class is over and she associates the book with our mom-and-me experience it the pool. I would buy again for someone preparing their kid for swim class.

Purchased for my daughter when she was 3 yrs old; a year later, she still loves to read this book, especially during summer swim lessons. It's a very sturdy book, with glossy wipeable pages.

More for younger child, not for 3+

Purchased for my daughter when she was starting swim lessons.

This book is great! My toddler daughter started swimming lessons, and we wanted a book about swimming to make her comfortable with the idea. The sequence of events in the book are the same we go through when we go to lessons! very accurate! The characters are diverse and realistic. Great book! My daughter loves it!

My toddler doesn't love water, actually actively hates it when it gets on his face, but I signed him up for swim lessons. We read this and talked to him about how much fun we would have learning to swim and we would read this book before his lesson each week. I think it helped shape his expectations of what would happen during swim lessons and he started looking forward to it every week.

I have purchased all Anna McQuinn's books. My toddler loves them all. She wants me to read her a book about Lola every night.

Reading The Third Door changed my life. I really don’t know how to say it otherwise, and frankly struggle with words to describe how deeply the book has affected me since. As a college student myself, we are often fed generic pieces of advice as to how to obtain success and achieve the life of our dreams. “Don’t give up!” “Keep the faith” “Do what you love.” At times, the noise can become overwhelming, and more importantly, outdated!!!!!! In the age of the internet, so many things have changed! The Third Door tells the philosophies of both young and new entrepreneurs, from Bill Gates and Elliot Bisnow, about how they achieved ravishing success and what skills we can learn from their journeys.Case in point: How do you separate yourself from thousands of other candidates applying online for a job? How do you gain mentors and find allies in business? How do you develop a network when you are just starting off and do not know anyone? How does one approach someone (either in person or online) and appear ambitious as opposed to simply unprofessional? How do you write a proper email? Is there a such thing as being over-persistent? If so, what is the line? How do you bounce back from rejection? Or create momentum for a project you are passionate about? What is the difference between a linear life and an exponential life? How can you create the latter? How do you "find your passion" or "follow your bliss?" Infiltrate echelons of business where you may be able to make an impact? If the internet has produced a new wave of teachers, authors, and influencers, then Alex is the guru for us all - not just millennials, but ALL people seeking to achieve their dreams. The reason? What the Third Door provides more than anything is INFORMATION & ACCESS. Access to the personal anecdotes of some of the greatest leaders and innovators of our time, and sheer information - details about their path, past failures, practical (seriously practical) pieces of advice that anyone may apply in their own journey respective. These skills are transferrable no matter what you seek to do and will help you work smarter, not harder- giving you tools to achieve your wildest dream in a shorter span of time. In fact, it is a book you will need to read many times over to fully absorb its wisdom and one which I am so grateful to have found as early as I did. Thank you Alex for undertaking this journey to help us all succeed in greater and more meaningful ways. Your persistent emailing, crouching in bathrooms, chasing after some of the most brilliant people of our time is to have been well worth it.

I got this book thinking that I would be learning about how each famous person found their 3rd door. I like the concept of the 3rd door and do believe it is a fantastic way to look at life. However, the book isn't about what the 3rd door was for these people. It was more about him trying to get interviews with famous people and getting rejected. I hate to give the author one star because you can see how important writing this book was to him. I found about Alex from the Cathy Heller podcast when she interviewed him about this book and it was a fantastic interview. Just listen to the podcast and skip the book.

Featuring computer magnate Bill Gates as the elusive white whale.Showcasing The Price is Right as a vehicle to success.Adding in amazing adventures across the globe. In Alex Banahan’s first book, The Third Door, he attempts to find out how successful people got their start. He calls it the “third door,” through which these successful folks became successful. He says there is always a first door, where most people wait to get in. Then, there is the second door — the VIP door — where celebrities get in. Finally, there is the third door, be it through an alley, window, or some other unique way, where other people can gain access to an event. The story reads almost like a novel and is hard to put down. Cameos are made by Tim Ferriss, Cal Fussman, and Larry King. They are all a part of his mission to discover the secrets to getting started. As you piece things together, you see his friend Kevin throughout the book. Kevin, of course, is Kevin The Manager on Cal Fussman’s podcast. Knowing some of the backstory helps with the real story that Banayan tells. One thing he learned from the person who became his mentor, Elliott Bisnow, is that you should never take your phone out in a meeting. Bisnow became Banayan’s mentor and ends up featured prominently in the book. Bisnow is an entrepreneur who also started the Summit Leadership Conferences, which are held at various places at various times but feature prominent leaders and entrepreneurs. Banayan gets an offer from Bisnow that could change his life … and leads to a moment of choice.Bill Gates, founder of Windows, is Banayan’s white whale for much of the story. During his conversation with Gates, Banayan figures out some things, but not necessarily from the context of what Gates shares. It’s a great interview and an eye-opening experience for Banayan on his mission. As it goes on, you find that the pursuit is about much more than the pursuit of money. This is the passionate pursuit to find the meaning of why people become successful. This is the story of a seven-year process, one that was supposed to last a few months. If you like your nonfiction to read like fiction, Banayan’s story is worth your time. It’s a page turner and one that is tough to put down. You’ll learn about passion, pursuit, and personality as you read this book. You also gain some tidbits throughout that can help you with your passion project, as well. And remember, there is always -- ALWAYS -- a Third Door.
