Ava Buchannan is your typical southern belle, until the war starts and her husband leaves to join the cause. He leaves Ava in charge of running his family business: as Maypole, Texas’ undertaker. She does this for seven years and finally can’t physically or mentally do it any longer. She needs help, but more importantly she wants companionship and someone to love and talk to. Maypole is posting ads in papers asking for husbands, so Ava decides to answer one of the responses, not for a husband but for help with the undertaker business.Jeremiah Ellington is looking for a place to call home after the war. He wants a fresh start but has nowhere to go. When he sees Ava, he falls for her and knows she is the one he will marry. He will do anything to get her to say yes.Ava and Jeremiah were a perfect match for each other. He’s fun loving and easy going and likes to tease Ava a lot. Ava is your typical southern belle who can’t let go of tradition and being a lady, or can she. She likes Jeremiah, but is afraid to love him as she’s still not sure that her husband won’t be coming back from the war to her. She just needs to open up her heart and let Jeremiah in. There were a few scenes in the book that had me laughing at what one or both of them did. Such a fun couple. I highly recommend this book to others.

The time is February 1868, nearly three years since the end of the Civil War, and yet, Ava Buchannan still holds on to a thread of hope that her late husband, Peter, will come home. He has been gone for almost seven years and no word for more than four years. The town of Maypearl, Texas has been advertising for mail-order grooms after so many of their men went off to war, and many never returned. It is suggested to Ava to consider it, and yet she hasn’t let go of the past—but what if she could find a man willing to help in the business.Ava and Peter had only been married one month when he left to serve, reminding her it was her duty to him to continue his family business of undertaker. Ava has been a true Southern lady, staying strong and supportive, at least that is what the townfolk see, but deep down Ava hates what she is doing, cries and gets sick with each body she must prepare.“Wife, you’ll do your duty as I shall. I shall be fighting for our cause. You’ll be here holding our home together. That is why we married. You know your place and your duty. My duty to my family is to keep the business in line. Yours is to me.”Jeremiah Ellington served his country as a surgeon, but took a bullet to the leg at Vicksburg, captured by the Union, and then finally released. Returning home to Savannah to realize it was all gone, he has nothing, and can’t even continue his job as a surgeon. Through an ad, he will accept a position in Maypearl, Texas to work as an undertaker with the possibility of a future and even marriage. The plot will have Ava struggling with her life, her work, and her memories. Finally capitulating to needing help, and accepting that Peter is never coming home will have her offering a job to Jeremiah Elliott. The chemistry between these two is immediate, yet she will try and fight it. I love the way they spar with each other and yet offer to heal from the past. The story is a clean, sweet romance developed from the tragedies of the civil war. Neither one is left untouched, but learn to move forward. Together they can have a future—but first, they must be willing to accept the past and put it behind them.“A true southern lady,” he replied admiringly. “Resourceful, charitable, and strong.”

Being an undertaker at any time in history would be an unpleasant task but after a war, it would be especially awful and being a woman doing that job would be terrible! This is the circumstance that Ava Buchanan finds herself in! She was married to a man whose family had been doing the undertaking business in a small town for generations but her husband went off to fight in the Civil War and didn't come back so Ava finds herself having to continue doing the undertaking duties in his absence and she's reached the end of her rope! I wouldn't have lasted one day! I know the conditions at that time would have been awful! Ava is physically, mentally and emotionally drained so realizes she needs to hire a man to help her but the small town where she lives lacks men, due to the war, so she sends a notice out in surrounding areas. Jeremiah Ellington answers the ad and as soon as he meets Ava, decides to sweep her off her feet! I loved these two characters! Ava is shy at first because she was only married for a short time and even though years have past since her husband left for the war, she's always thought he might come home. Jeremiah was in the war and has seen the horrors and knows that you need to make the most of each day! I enjoyed how much Jeremiah loved to tease Ava and treat her special. This was a wonderful book of two characters trying to live in the aftermath of war! I definitely recommend it!I received this book from the author but was not required to review it. These opinions are my own.

This book is oh so good! The characters are so fun and made me want to be apart of their community. I have to say I fell in love with Jeremiah right from the start. The author has shown us her wonderful sense of humor in this book, I found myself laughing so hard I was crying! The fun and witty banter between Ava and Jeremiah is so well thought out not to mention the way they like to best each other. I’m definitely in love with this book and wish it didn’t have to end. Believe me when I say this book deserves 10 stars!

Ava needs help. She’s sick of the job she has taken over after her husband left for the war and didn’t return. But when Jeremiah comes to help her she’s confused too, can she really let this man not only take over the business but maybe also her heart? This is such a heartwarming, fun story. Jeremiah with his humor and charm is just what Ava needs, I loved the banter.A book by this author won’t disappoint you!I received this book from the author, this review is my honest opinion.

This collection, from 1962, finds the Saint variously in Hamburg, London, Paris, Hurley (England), Stockholm and Loch Ness. The outer stories are rather formulaic and not very interesting, despite some entertaining trivia about the Monster in the last. But the two inner stories are minor gems.In Paris, Simon attempts to help a frail chambermaid who, at her wits' end, has appealed to him for help against a particularly foul blackmailer. But the apparently easy task is unexpectedly complicated by Inspector Archimède Quercy of the Police Judiciare, whom we last met in The Saint in Europe. And, very unusually in a story of this late vintage, in "The Intemperate Reformer" we have the return of two old friends: Sam Outrell, Simon's janitor when he lived at Cornwall House before WWII; and Monty Hayward, his reluctant but stalwart fellow-outlaw through Getaway, likewise over 20 years before. Both of these stories compare with Charteris at his best, in the pre-War days. Whether they're worth the price of the book will of course depend on your budget.P.S. For a list of all Charteris's Saint books, look up "Simon Templar" (section "The Saint book series") on Wikipedia.

#162,005 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I love magic and books about magic, so I picked this one up on the day it came out. I learned a few things, but ultimately it fell short of what I was expecting. First, its mostly text with very few pictures. Most books on the history of magic have a lot of pictures because it is a visual art. It lends itself perfectly for that type of work. This didn't have as many pictures so it won't be as attractive to a general audience, but it also isn't a 'scholarly' work. The authors attempt to cover a lot of ground in a short space. They succeed, but ultimately its a cursory look at many different areas and people, with not a lot of depth. There are two areas where the authors did some really good work, that I haven't seen in other books on the history of magic. First, they correct the erroneous view that people used to not know what magic was. They give many examples of different people being very aware of what a magic trick was even hundreds of years ago, dispelling the common narrative that the lay audience only recently realized cards tricks weren't real magic. In a similar way, the authors also introduced a couple of magicians that I had not heard much about before. Again, not much information, but a good launching off point if you want to move on from this book.Worth picking up if you love magic, but not for the general fan. There are better books for anyone looking for a general history of magic, but this is a good one to add to your collection if you already own a few of those.

I’m a big fan of Steinmeyer’s other books on magic, stage illusion, and the entertainers who practiced it so I pre-ordered this months in advance. I’m disappointed in the writing style, lack of new material, and a general attempt to discount religion and belief in chapters with a semi-philosophical style. I thought this was a book about the “Deceptive Art” but I think it misses the mark in lots of ways. There are an awful lot of assumptions and vague statements about the subject I was hoping to learn more about. I’ve had to put this one down repeatedly for weeks at a time as I haven’t found it an enjoyable read. It feels like the writers struggled with their own basic premise in creating a cohesive history. I’m at the halfway point now and I stopped to write this review. To be honest I may never finish the book. I’ll give future books another shot from the authors but I recommend you avoid this one.

I was surprised that the two authors, with extensive credentials, could produce such a blah book. It is indeed, a history, but after the first few interminable chapters, detailing everyone who said "take a card." it begins to get heavy on the eyes. The writing style is very poor, with constant repetitions throughout. In deference to the conjurers, I presume, no explanation of how the tricks were performed is given. The endless parade of names and bios of magicians from many years past, got old very quickly. I had much greater hopes for this book, but alas, it fell short.

This book helped me better understand the art of magic as practiced by two professional magicians I know. I love and appreciate their tricks, whether table-side or in front of an audience, and this book informed me of the importance of the magician-viewer interaction which enhances the experience.

I've just finished reading this book and enjoyed it immensely. Lamont and Steinmeyer make some remarkable revisions in the history of conjuring, based on fresh research; particularly on conjuring's early history. The authors correct tales initially based on inadequate research and repetition that have stood unquestioned for over a 150 years. The book is an eye-opener, an enjoyable read and an important correction of the record for conjuring history.

There was a lot of info in this book. Some was interesting, some was dry but for the most part it was good.

Finished this one up this morning and surprisingly I am not a fan. Surprisingly because I love the art and history of magic and I am also a fan of these two authors respective books but this book is a mess. It’s way too dry for a general audience and too general for anyone who has a good knowledge of magic history. Therefore, I am not really sure who the audience for this book would be. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend it.
