This book is excellent for the following demographic:People who already have a decent level of skill and experience in statistics who want to: - 1) Elevate their understanding of ML techniques without absolutely breaking their skull on dense theory - 2) Learn how to implement the algorithms in Python and gain moderate proficiency in sci-kit learnI would say it's not a beginner's book, but more for intermediates. I am half-way through and find it a little challenging, but definitely attainable. This balance I consider to be putting me right in the sweet spot for learning. To judge whether you're a good candidate for this book, you can compare your experience and skill to me :I started this book after earning a PhD in the social sciences, which basically gave me good coverage in inferential and applied statistics (T, F distributions, p-values, confidence intervals, linear regression, one-way and factorial ANOVA, PCA, etc.). I also took a machine learning graduate course at my university and a few online courses in introductory ML for R. All of this background gave me solid grounding in statistics. With all this I still find this book somewhat challenging, but definitely not too hard. I'd say without my background I would find this book hard to get through. There is linear algebra, concepts like minimizing cost functions, bias/variance tradeoff, learning from errors, etc. So, if you are just starting out or reading the previous sentence and don't know what I'm talking about, I would recommend learning more stats fundamentals before starting this.After you gain some proficiency in stats, come learn this book and elevate your understanding of the algorithms, add nuance to them, integrate them into your mental conceptual structures more fully (e.g. you'll know more nuances of ML, e.g. which subsets of algorithms are preferred for controlling more of the bias, variance, how random forest is basically bagging with a twist, how adaboost's treatment of classification errors has kind of an element of perceptron implementation, and many more).

(I own the 1st edition, and was given early access to a pre-release PDF of the 2nd ed. My paperback copy just arrived.)This is the best book I've seen for professional software engineers to bootstrap themselves into Data Science, Machine Learning and (with the 2nd ed) Deep Learning. It makes heavy use of the scikit-learn library; and the latter chapters give an excellent high-level overview of TensorFlow. Books in this space can often feel either too basic or too academic. Not this one -- for me it hits the sweet spot of explaining and doing.What I love about Raschka's writing is how he builds up from theory to practical code. It lays out the concepts, math, and code together which helps comprehension. So, if you happen to be rusty in math, like me, you can look to the code to help explain what the equations actually do. The chapters of the book build up from each other; so many of the examples feel like they can be used as recipes for building your own custom models.

This book will stay on your reference shelf for years to come!The authors clearly have taught these materials many times before, and their significant mathematical and technical prowess is delivered using a very approachable style. This book seems best suited for someone who wants to sit down and begin to apply Python Machine Learning to a problem that they already know they have. It's not particularly an "intro course to M.L.", but it contains enough details that you could easily follow along and learn how to use the various tools and techniques of the field if you've never seen or heard of them before.The copious notes scattered throughout this book are pure gold, mined from the obvious experiences of the authors while working in the field. If there ever is a Machine Learning equivalent to the venerable "Forrest M. Mims Engineering Notebook" for electronics, I feel these two authors could write it!Once you use this book to work on your current M.L. problem in Python, you will find yourself returning to it as a reference for other problems in the M.L. space. Its lucid explanations will help reinforce the topics presented, and cement your understanding of the materials.This book will get you writing Python Machine Learning code to work your current M.L. problem in no time flat!

I'm very pleased with this book. It includes complete practical approach to machine learning topic. Not only details about all algorithms, but also discusses various critical steps in preparing the data sets for ML work, evaluating the models using APIs from Scikit-Learn and Tensor Flow.Can't wait to attempt two RNN projects at the end of the book.

I found this book to be very clearly written and also very informative since in addition to providing code examples it tried to illustrate the basics of theory behind what makes machine learning work.The explanations were mainly done by showing examples of data on a x-y plot and how the different techniques separate the data to make a decision. This is a nice way to reduce the complexity of explanation and getting lost in the details of the mathematics and programming syntax etc and to get at the heart of where different algorithms have strengths.This is review is from the perspective of someone who knows a little python and had little knowledge of machine learning, but has kind of seen neural nets and regressions used in different applications over the years.Part of its usefulness to me is that it gives me a nice way to explain machine learning to non-scientists.

About the Author

S. Christian Albright received both his B.S. degree in mathematics and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford. He then taught in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University until his retirement in 2011. This book was recommended to me for an independent study I was doing in college. It goes step by step not only explaining how to do things in VBA but also why some quirks are the way they are. It also comes with lots of sample files in addition to the sample code in the book.I will say if you are looking to automate charts, graphs and other objects this book does not go into great detail of this. Partly because Microsoft made it difficult to do with Excel 2007 and partly because the main focus of the book is to use VBA as a modelling tool utilizing the spreadsheets.Definitely I book I will not be returning at the end of the semester.

This book is a good summary for understanding VBA and has many examples. It helps readers understand VBA through examples and is one of the most comprehensive that way.

This is a good starting book for anyone who wants to learn VBA but I feel it lacks coverage. Many times, for fairly simple programs, I had to google information on how to code becasue the information was not in the book.

I am a self-taught VBA user who has had no classes, training, or mentoring on this particular language. Before this book, I knew enough to simplify some tasks and draw "ooo"s and "aahh"s from peers. I am now progressing in my career, and VBA is an essential skill for the positions in my interest. So, I decided to try to solidify my understanding of the language and its capabilities.This book was the perfect choice. After just a couple hours of reading, skimming, and analyzing the examples given, I have made major improvements to several programs I had played around with in the past. I am much more confident in my ability, and I have only scratched the surface of this text. If you already have programming experience, most of the first 12 or so chapters can be skimmed, and you should find the multiple example programs extremely helpful with minimal time and effort. If you are new to programming, these beginning chapters will get you started. The examples are practical and interesting. If you need to learn VBA for Excel, this is the way to go.

I was surprised that this book has been around for so long. But it is an interesting look at possible futures. It is one of the only books where I quickly adapted to the lack of gender pronouns - it is usually very disruptive to my reading. The story was often not a happy one, but despite the fantasy element, it seemed all too plausible.I have some limited experience with the mental health care system - and I sadly found that much of the description of that system still rings true. How quick we are to judge and diminish others. At times I was quite angry: for example, at one point a patient is restrained in the bed and her pleas to use the bathroom are ignored, but later the orderly says "they just pee all over themselves and they don't even care."I do recommend this book. It is an interesting story, and makes a number of points. It doesn't bang you too hard on the head to make them, either.

I first read this book shortly after it was published and just finished re-reading it. I never forgot it and was curious as to how well it held up after all these decades. Still an excellent, absorbing read. I was struck by Piercy's vivid depiction of the rough justice doled out to poor people of color--an issue clearly still very much with us. The author was eerily prescient in anticipating progressive trends that have come to the fore in recent decades, including sustainability, locavore, low-on-the-food-chain eating, intelligent energy use, even the rising interest in 'tiny houses' and small intentional communities. Perhaps even more remarkable and somewhat chilling are her evocations of less positive trends such as 24/7 in-home access to violent and degrading 'entertainment' and the wrist-worn 'kenners' on which people are so dependent that they literally cannot function without them--smartphones, anyone? I was intrigued to discover that even the utopian future that Connie visits is far from perfect--her new friends have enlightened values but are still struggling with dark aspects of human nature. I had remembered it much more rosily and appreciated anew the complexity of the society she evoked. I was saddened and shocked by the book's ending; I had also remembered that completely differently--that Connie somehow is able to join Luciente and her other friends in Massapoiset for good at the last minute. I am still struggling with whether it was all 'real' (within the speculative fiction universe, of course) or a portrait of a rich mind in extreme duress--or if the whole elaborate, multifaceted story is really, as some readers have suggested, meant to be read as a metaphor for the issues facing humanity. In any event, it continues to haunt me and provides rich food for thought. Ms. Piercy, you are an amazing writer--would you consider a sequel?

I tried several times, each time starting afresh, to get my head around the characters and the story, but I just couldn't get into the book. The tone is flat and the caricature style irritating. The introduction to this (2016) edition, written by Pierce, seems somewhat of a vain justification of her work.

WOTEOT took me a while to read mostly because the book wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be. Like most sci-fi it was a story about how we treat each other, and the futures that can manifest. I was thinking we were going into time travel, which we did a bit but...more, the story sight to help readers better understand how what we do now creates what comes next.

A dark and difficult story that I’m still processing years later. I came away with a profound sense of personal good fortune and a desire to simply SEE AND ACKNOWLEDGE invisible people. The future Connie experienced is such a contrast to the abuses perpetrated on a repeatedly broken human who continues to hope.

I read this book in a few days. It was gripping now I can’t get the story out of my head. I have profound saddness for Connie that I will think of for the rest of my life.

Slow start but once she grabs you, you are in for a hell of a ride. I totally reccomend this book.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I purchase extra copies to give away as gifts. I struggle to talk about the content without giving away key pieces that can ruin the experience. Please read. All of Piercy's works are worth the time. This one especially.

Diane Bell is a screenwriter and director. Made for less than $150k, her first feature film, OBSELIDIA, premiered in Dramatic Competition at Sundance, and won two awards. The film went on to win further awards at festivals around the world, and to be nominated for two prestigious Independent Spirit Awards. There are plenty of good filmmaking books out there, but this one stands out because of its mix of practical advice married to how to think about low-budget indie filmmaking in a way that makes it much more likely you'll get over the finish line. The subtitle could be "How to Think Guerrilla Filmmaking and How to Actually Do It." Very worthwhile.

Very Inspiring book for the indie filmmaker. Diane Bell explains how to navigate the challenges of indie filmmaking. This was required reading for my low budget filmmaking class at UCLA.

If you're new to filmmaking or you just need a little push in the right direction, you should read this book!

There are plenty of books on making movies. I own quite a few of them. But in my opinion, Diane Bell’s SHOOT FROM THE HEART is the best guide available for someone working in the indie arena. I say this as a film school graduate and as someone who has had a feature film produced.The qualities of SHOOT FROM THE HEART are numerous: Bell writes beautifully (with a comedic touch). She speaks from experience (three films produced so far). She offers a complete 16-step approach from “Step 1. Develop a Singular Script” through “Step 16. Execute Your Distribution Plan.” The book’s organization is clear and meant to work as a checklist.In terms of detail, the book can’t be beat. Bell has the ability to get way down in the weeds…and still make it interesting. For example, in the section about the importance of getting feedback on the script, she suggests the type of readers you need—and why your mother might not be the best choice. She talks about the number of feedback givers she relies on, and she provides specific prompts that evoke useful feedback. She also identifies what constitutes a destructive feedback giver and what you should do when you encounter a bitter armchair critic who tries to destroy your work. She even handles the difficult matter of whether a script is over-developed or underdeveloped.Perhaps most important, Bell is truly encouraging. She acknowledges that producing a movie can be scary and that making it happen requires a great amount of hard work. But based on her experience, she assures novices that they can do it. While she acknowledges that her method isn’t the only way, she makes the case that her approach will get the job done. The key—as suggested in the title—is to pay attention to what one’s own heart is saying.

I was looking for a book on this topic since a long time and I am glad that I decided to give this book a try as this book has all the information I needed to know on the topic

Five stars? Is that all I can give? Really, this book deserves so much more.The techniques provided on these pages, as well as the suggestion it gathered, are worth far more than five stars and I would consider this book to be a great bargain at twice the price. Keep up the excellent work.Highly recommended.

This is very interesting book. I am was interested and I am read this book properly. This is really helpful book for me. It has some rally great and proven techniques to analyzing people and to read the body language of people. Overall, this was something I personally enjoyed reading about, and I definitely recommend it to people that want to dive in to the world of better understanding people, analyze the and read their body language.
