My 7th grade students used this book to supplement our reading of the first novel in the series, The Ghost in the Tokaido Inn. The Hooblers did a great job creating characters that help readers understand the world of medieval Japan. We even contacted the Hooblers to ask some questions about the books, and they graciously responded.

My 14 year old daughter gives this 5 stars! She loved it and the previous book as well!

The Demon in the Teahouse is another hit for another hit for Dorothy Hoobler. This series is a wonderful read for both young and old. The students in my fourth grade class love these books!

A fantastic follow up to an amazing original story. Though this story takes place in the pleasure district of ancient Edo in Japan, it does a good job weaving a tight story about love and honor with out being seedy in any way. A great read to remind one about what honor is really is.

The Hooblers just keep on giving more to contemplate.

Interesting plot. Well written.

Its a part of my favorite series, I love the book. I'm very satisfied with my purchase thanks so much.

it was no problems!

Pretty useful book for the price, even if you're a skeptic or a very critical witchcraft reader. Lots of good info even if not everything is perfect, which you would hope would be the case with that many freakin' pages, right? It's bigger and heavier than my college textbooks and I'm pretty impressed by how much of that bulk gets used to its full potential. Now, I could do without Judika defaulting to calling witches females/she/her/women in the book, but she DOES state that all genders can be witches if they so choose. She's by no means a flawless author, and truth be told, no author is, but she's definitely got some major experience under her belt. Don't get this book if you're expecting a COMPLETE guide to anything, you'll need more than just this book. It covers a small selection of each topic, sometimes skipping quite a few deities in pantheons and such. This was entirely expected, because complete never actually means complete with books like this. No one knows it all, after all.The book covers a VERY wide range of topics, hence the somewhat small selection for each one. No matter what path you're considering, you'll probably find at least a couple things about it, and learn about others while you're at it. No matter what books you get, always remember the importance of cross-referencing, but also remember that sometimes the lore on something is not the end-all-be-all for information about it. Don't be scared to experiment with what things mean to you (as long as you don't eat something poisonous or something ridiculous like that!) and figure out how it works best in your practice. Not everything in the book is strictly about witchcraft, so even on-witches might find some use in this if they're interested in lore on deities, old holidays, and general history.Overall I found the book really useful as both a useful reference and an interesting read, and I 100% recommend it to anyone who's still on the fence about it

Finally we are getting the books we deserve! Reference books for the magickal practioner.I've owned "The Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells" and devoured it (aprox 900 pgs) in a week, earning my Hermoine "light reader's" badge indefinitely. I have been aching to get my hands on this one since I first laid my eyes on it in the library's directory! I knew I was hooked when I racked up 30$ in fees, lol, bc I didn't want to give it back!Judika doesn't go on and on about her accolades and accomplishment (ie Gilderoy Lockhart). She gets to the point. She researches and references her sources and encourages you to do the same! This book reads like a true encyclopedia and that alone is a testament to the amount of work she's had to put into it! Stuff like, in the human language there's over 40 words for "witch"/ "magickal practitioner". HAD NO CLUE! The many different magickal practices that play a role in what that particular society thought magick users were/ are/ will be. Orishia, Hoodoo, Santeria, Italian, Christian and even Gypsy magickal traditions and their respective practitioners (titles, styles, talents, etc.)This should be required reading for all who truly wish to walk, teach and learn the magickal traditions.

I love Judika Illes, I'm so fond of her books. And this book takes the cake. I've always been into witchcraft, but I found it challenging to find books that accurately related to my feelings about the subject. Her collection of these books blew me out of the water. I would definitely recommend to any person interested in the subject, intentions good or bad. It gives you a greater understanding of beliefs from around the world. It does not have images no, but, I didn't buy it to look at pictures. Five stars.

I love this encyclopedia. I bought the physical book version (which I highly recommend VS. Kindle: while Kindle is great, there's just something about a physical book that adds character). I found it comprehensive, and entertaining. This book covers pop culture, history, legends, and more. My only minor complaint was some of the entities detailing old stories or fictional things (such as TV shows) didn't explicitly explain they were fictional accounts. But that could also just be me not reading thouroughly enough. This encyclopedia covers everything about the history and lore of witchcraft. It covers some herbs and spells, but mainly it focuses on history. For example: It covers several historic cases of witchcraft trials and "well-known witches". If you're looking for a book of spells and witchcraft instructions, this is not the book for that purpose. This same other does have several other books fitting that category however. One is "The Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells." Well I haven't read that particular encyclopedia, anything written by this author seems to be well researched, easy to follow, and entertaining. She is a good writer and there is a down-to-earth quality to her writing. Almost like she's talking to you rather then you reading a book. Highly recommend this book!

I purchased this for my wife. I marked five stars because she is constantly reading this giant encyclopedia. Happy wi(tch)fe, happy life.

This is a fantastic book. The author knows her stuff and I like that she writes with both seriousness and humor. I think some folk were disappointed in the lack of pictures; I was not. The information contained within the book makes up for any lack of pictures. I was looking more for content, and that's what this book is.

Clearly I have no read the entire book yet seeing as how it's over 800 pages. I do love the in depth descriptions of all the terms I have read so far. I love that it's not just the authors personal opinion on topics it's information and facts from around the world and different cultures. I also love the fact that this book is all content and not filled with random drawings or sketching or stupid things wasting valuable page space like other books I've seen. I can't wait to finish the book

Anything I've read by Judika has been absolutely awesome. Very informative for anyone interested in the craft.

Review

From the reviews of the first edition: "This book presents in great detail all the results one needs to prove the Morse homology theorem using classical techniques from algebraic topology and homotopy theory. … This book collects all these results together into a single reference with complete and detailed proofs. … With the stress on completeness and by its elementary approach to Morse homology, this book is suitable as a textbook for a graduate level course, or as a reference for working mathematicians and physicists." (Bulletin Bibliographique, Vol. 51 (1-2), 2005) "This book provides a treatment of finite-dimensional Morse theory and its associated chain complex, pitched at a level appropriate to early-stage graduate students. … Throughout, the authors take pains to make the material accessible, and … extensive references are provided. … Many well-drawn figures are provided to clarify the text, and there are over 200 exercises, with hints for some of them in the back. … Banyaga and Hurtubise’s book provides a valuable service by introducing young mathematicians to a circle of ideas … ." (Michael J. Usher, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2006 i) "This book is an exposition of the ‘classical’ approach to finite dimensional Morse homology. … This book presents in great detail all the results one needs to prove the Morse Homology theorem … . References to the literature are provided throughout the book … . A lot of examples, suggestive figures and diagrams in every chapter and many useful exercises at the end of the chapters makes this book a good and attractive textbook (as well as an excellent monograph). … The bibliography is exhaustive." (Ioan Pop, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1080, 2006)

Morse theory (the study of the critical points of a nondegenerate smooth function on a smooth manifold and in particular their topological implications) is a classic subject whose standard texts, Milnor's Morse Theory and Lectures on the h-Cobordism Theorem and Morse's Calculus of Variations in the Large, date from the '60s or earlier. Starting in the late '80s, due to the work of Floer and Witten, a new perspective emerged, both on the old finite-dimensional theory (Witten's rediscovery of Morse homology) and on infinite-dimensional Morse theory, initiated by Floer, which resembles gauge theory and has deep ties to symplectic geometry. This book by Banyaga and Hurtubise attempts to, first of all, present the classic finite-dimensional theory but in modern dynamical-systems terminology, and also give a brief introduction to the newer developments in Floer homology. It is more successful on accomplishing the former, as its treatment of Floer homology is rather cursory. It is largely self-contained, as an introductory graduate text, requiring only a knowledge of singular homology theory and basic topology and analysis. The book includes 2 chapters on prerequisite material, namely, CW homology and basic differential topology, but if you don't know these subjects already, in particular, the differential topology, this won't be enough to help you. All the standard results in Morse theory, as can be found in Milnor's books or Matsumoto's An Introduction to Morse Theory, are presented, although some of the proofs are given in more general form, such as Palais's proof of the fundamental Morse lemma, which also works on Banach spaces. There are many topics that have been collected from the literature, including the full set of Morse inequalities, such as the polynomial Morse inequalities, and Morse-Bott functions, which usually don't appear in other books on Morse theory. There's also an extensive treatment of dynamical systems, which are implicit in the Morse theory but not usually formally addressed, including a modestly analytically challenging proof of the stable/unstable manifold theorem, which forms the core of the book, as well the lambda-lemma, Kupka-Smale theorem, which shows the Morse-Smale gradient vector fields are generic, and the Conley index. The culmination of these technical results is the Morse homology theorem, which relates the CW homology (hence singular homology) of a compact smooth Riemannian manifold to the homology of a Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex, which is particularly easy to compute, only involving counting flow lines between critical points with signs coming from orientations and flow directions. The last 2 chapters are more specialized and can be omitted in a short course or on a first reading. There's one on the Morse theory of Grassmann manifolds by constructing perfect Morse-Bott functions on them. Here previous knowledge of Lie groups and algebras is necessary, although some of it is derived. A large part of the proof of the existence of such Mose-Bott functions is practically copied verbatim from Milnor's ("Morse Theory") proof that Morse functions are generic. The payoff in this chapter for so much effort is somewhat modest - it ends by only stating some similar results, such as the cohomology of the classification space for complex bundles and Morse theory for Lie groups, that should probably have been proved here. The last chapter and a half of the book is primarily concerned with applications to symplectic geometry, including Floer homology. A ton of material is summarized very quickly, often by just copying sections of several papers, in a manner that will not be of much help for beginners. The main point of this seems to be showing how Morse theory can be applied or extended, or even just showing THAT it can be applied. This is a textbook, so there is a wealth of exercises and a fair amount of examples. For most of the book, the proofs develop very slowly, with all of the steps explicitly spelled out, making them easy to follow. The emphasis on using modern dynamical systems terminology and theorems, the presentation of multiple proofs of the same theorem, practical demonstrations on how Morse homology can be computed, and the inclusion of more obscure results are also pluses, as is the proof of the Morse homology theorem, which differs from other proofs in that it doesn't involve infinite-dimensional techniques or require overly restrictive assumptions on the Morse function (such as it being self-indexing or compatible with a Riemann metric). It is unusual among books on Morse theory in that it is both modern (unlike Milnor, Morse, or Matsumoto) and classical (unlike Schwarz's Morse Homology or Chang's Infinite Dimensional Morse Theory). The main drawbacks of the book are that it doesn't do a good job of explaining or using the Floer theory and homology on Grassmann manifolds presented at the end of the book, a large amount of material seems to be copied from other sources, it takes a long time to arrive at the most interesting results (certainly longer than necessary), and there is a plethora of mathematical typos, much more than one normally finds (and the bibliography includes 2 of the most bizarre kinds of typos I've ever seen).

This "book" has no page numbering! How am I supposed to find a recipe I liked again? I can only use so many sticky notes before there are too many to be helpful. And it goes without saying that there is no index of recipes, since there’s no way to refer to them. One chapter contains 100 recipes which are at least grouped as Soups, Salads, Entrees, etc, but they’re not even in alphabetical order. In the chapter listing two weeks of suggested menus, the recipes are listed after the menus but are in a totally random order unrelated to their order in the menus. I could number all the pages and create my own index, but it would be easier just to look up recipes on the internet. I give the book two stars because it does contain some useful content, but it is too difficult to use as a reference. Buy the Kindle edition instead.Although the printed book has an ISBN number, no publishing house is listed, only that it is made in the USA (Middletown, Delaware). If I were the publisher, I wouldn’t want my name associated with this “book” either.

The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy: An Economist Examines the Markets, Power, and Politics of World Trade, by Pietra Rivoli

From Publishers Weekly

During a 1999 protest of the World Trade Organization, Rivoli, an economics professor at Georgetown, looked on as an activist seized the microphone and demanded, "Who made your T-shirt?" Rivoli determined to find out. She interviewed cotton farmers in Texas, factory workers in China, labor champions in the American South and used-clothing vendors in Tanzania. Problems, Rivoli concludes, arise not with the market, but with the suppression of the market. Subsidized farmers, and manufacturers and importers with tax breaks, she argues, succeed because they avoid the risks and competition of unprotected global trade, which in turn forces poorer countries to lower their prices to below subsistence levels in order to compete. Rivoli seems surprised by her own conclusions, and while some chapters lapse into academic prose and tedious descriptions of bureaucratic maneuvering, her writing is at its best when it considers the social dimensions of a global economy, as in chapters on the social networks of African used-clothing entrepreneurs. "It brings history and economics in an enjoyable way..." (Financial Times, 21st September 2005) “…a fine account of how the countervailing forces of the market and protectionism conflict in combining in a single product…” (Financial Times, 30 July 2005) "Rarely is a business book so well written that one would gladly stay up all night to finish it..."  (CIO: Chief Information Officer Magazine, June 15, 2005) "Globalization is a hot-button topic that generates strong feelings along with images of boarded-up, independent businesses in America and exploitative sweatshops overseas. But what exactly is it? In The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy, Georgetown University business professor Pietra Rivoli chronicles the round-the-world odyssey of a T-shirt, from Texas cotton-growers to an African used-clothing bazaar, to reveal how the planetary economy really works. Along the way, we see how entrepreneurial U.S. farmers team with government-sponsored researchers--and take advantage of subsidies and trade barriers--to dominate world cotton production. Migrant workers from Chinese family farms tell why they regard low-wage jobs in Shanghai sewing factories as golden opportunities. And only in that African used-clothing bazaar do we encounter a truly free market where entrepreneurs--perhaps including some future tycoons of the 21st century--utterly rely on pure business skills and instinct. Whether you feel hurt or helped by globalization, you'll certainly understand it better after reading this fascinating account." (Entrepreneur Magazine, May 2005 "...full of memorable characters and vivid scenes..." [and that] "Rivoli excels at making connections." (Time Magazine, March 28, 2005) "T-shirts may not have changed the world; but this story is a useful account of how free trade and protection certainly have." (Financial Times) "The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is an excellent piece of work - a thorough, lucid and (best of all) honest examination of how politics and economics intertwine in the real world." (The Philadelphia Inquirer) “Engrossing….(Rivoli) goes wherever the t-shirt goes and there are surprises around every corner…full of memorable characters and vivid scenes” (TIME) "Her nuanced and fair-minded approach is all the more powerful for eschewing the pretense of ideological absolutism, and her telescopic look through a single industry has all the makings of an economics classic." (New York Times) “…Succeeds admirably… T-shirts may not have changed the world, but this story is a useful account of how free trade and protectionism certainly have.” (Financial Times) “…a fascinating exploration of the history, economics and politics of world trade…The Travels of a T-Shirt is a thought-provoking yarn that exhibits the ugly, the bad and the good of globalization, and points to the unintended positive consequences of the clash between the proponents and opponents of free trade.” (Dallas-Fort Worth Star-Telegram) “…a readable and evenhanded treatment of the complexities of world trade… As Rivoli repeatedly makes clear, there is absolutely nothing free about free trade except the slogan.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

This book was amazing! I had to by this for an international economics class, and as such, was unsure of what it would be like. I mean, it was a book about t-shirts, what could possibly be so interesting, right? Well, as it turns out, a lot of things. You have no idea what kinds of crazy regulations, politics, social stigmas and drama can go into making a t-shirt. I think the most interesting thine was learning about the cotton industry in Texas and how the politics and innovation behind it makes Texas the number one cotton producer in the world. Considering the climate in the region where it's grown, it would seem highly unlikely for that to be true. But that;s where the science and innovation comes through. It's so fascinating. Being able to see just how complex making a shirt in the international market can be; from growing cotton to when you purchase and even what happens after you donate, shows (on a small scale), just how complicated the international economy is. This book is a wonderful read and recommend it for anyone who as any interest in the global economy.

The strongest tool in the novel, is choosing a T-shirt to drive the narrative which made it possible to learn about Texas Cotton, the Chinese hukou system, and African clothing markets all at once; the book flows entertainingly well while retaining pertinent facts and points. One area of improvement could have been a clearer stance on whether globalization is better or worse for the general well-being of the world. However, the thorough nature of exploring all the counter arguments and points makes for a compelling economic and political profile of a commodity that few people will ever think about. Keeping it as neutral as possible helps readers feel like learners and not indoctrinates. In the end though, I think it is pretty clear from the conclusion and epilogue that Pietra Rivoli seems to believe growing interdependence with more open communication would be a strength, not a weakness. In the conclusion as she meditates on her past experience as a global labor activist, she ponders Libanius’ words over trade as a source of bonding and sharing; although you can tell she may have her reservations about some injustices in the world due to globalization, she also sees the potential. Ultimately, I think she believes that a rising tide does not have to sink any boats as long as the process of globalization is handled ethically and gradually, with more consumer appreciation and education. There is much to consider when reading this book, and if you are not a student (formal or informal) of global economic affairs, then you may find it a laborious read. However, it is a great companion to technical books on the subject that can be very difficult to understand especially when considering the massive number of agreements that affect free trade. My only contention with the author is the final part that discusses the second hand market in Tanzania. I would suggest reading that with a chunk of salt when it comes to the attitude relayed in the tone. The content is accurate in that regard. Overall, a great and easy read with loads of information.

Still a great, somewhat iconoclastic, real-world introduction to globalization issues.

Having read, studied, and written on many sides of the trade debates, I've never before encountered such a non-ideological, open-minded account of the human effects of today's international trade regime. As a student of economics, I appreciated her focus on the important technical details of land tenure, payment, collective organization, and the other systems that make all the difference in how markets function--or don't. My only complaint was that, from an academic standpoint, Rivoli's book occasionally lacked diverse sources or relied overly much on a single author (Landes' wonderful book, The Wealth and Poverty of Nations, comes to mind) to the exclusion of other sources. However, given her extensive travel and interviews, it's hard to fault Rivoli with shoddy research and, overall, I'd say this book fills the notable gap between neoliberal absolutists and those who overlook the prosperity that free markets can provide. Not to mention it's a fantastic read.I'd recommend this book to a wide range of readers, from those who are curious about what this whole "globalization" thing is really all about, to those studying international affairs and economics who want a methodical, and generally rigorous, explanation of the mechanisms and effects behind world trade today.

Material World: A Global Family Portrait, by Peter Menzel Charles C. Mann

Amazon.com Review

In honor of the United Nations-sponsored International Year of the Family in 1994, award-winning photojournalist Peter Menzel brought together 16 of the world's leading photographers to create a visual portrait of life in 30 nations. Material World tackles its wide subject by zooming in, allowing one household to represent an entire nation. Photographers spent one week living with a "statistically average" family in each country, learning about their work, their attitudes toward their possessions, and their hopes for the future. Then a "big picture" shot of the family was taken outside the dwelling, surrounded by all their (many or few) material goods. The book provides sidebars offering statistics and a brief history for each country, as well as personal notes from the photographers about their experiences. But it is the "big pictures" that tell most of the story. In one, a British family pauses before a meal of tea and crumpets under a cloudy sky. In another, wary Bosnians sit beside mattresses used as sniper barricades. A Malian family composed of a husband, his two wives, and their children rests before a few cooking and washing implements in golden afternoon light. Material World is a lesson in economics and geography, reminding us of the world's inequities, but also of humanity's common threads. An engrossing, enlightening book. --Maria Dolan

We love looking at this book when we are studying specific countries in our homeschool geography class. My six year old son loves to sit with me as I read to him about the families in each place and how they live. It's amazing to me to see all of these different cultures and to be able to imagine what it would be like to live in these places. Sometimes it is quite eye opening to realize just how much we have in America. This book really makes you stop and think about all of these other places - would be a great conversation piece to have in your home.

Fascinating book we are using in our homeschool to study geography. It gives a very intimate and interesting look inside the life of families across the globe. My sons have been stunned to see the amount of poverty that exists in our world, yet also delighted to see that many countries are just like America in many ways. This book has allowed them to see life as it is without traveling. Actually I would prefer to take them in person, but that’s not financially possible. This book is a great alternative. My 10 yo has been saying how thankful he is to live in America! Mission accomplished. I want boys who are thankful for their blessings and are also sensitive to the needs of others in the world. I try and choose books that will pull my children out of their own worlds and into the lives of others. This book does that, and I suggest it for every family no matter if you homeschool or not.

I have purchased several copies of this book over the years. I replaced my first copy because my daughter took it to school so many times over the years it became tattered. The book is a series of photographs with brief narratives and data. Peter Menzel traveled forty some odd countries around the world, a good sample. In each, he found a family with the median income for the nation, a family with as many families above it as below it on the distribution of income. He photographed the family in and near its residence, focusing on the families possessions. in each case, one photo shows all the families belongings arrayed together. There are also three comparative photo spreads of meals of the world, televisions, of the world and toilets of the world. The fact that the book is 20 or so years old is obvious in terms of mobile devices and computers. Nonetheless, it is a brilliant exposition of under-consumption, sufficient consumption and over-consumption. I would note that it may be weaker in showing over-consumption given its focus on the median income family. It is still brilliant and poignant.

Still a great book and deeply thought-provoking. I'm not sure the represented countries and cultures are still as sensible about possessions, so I'd be interested in a follow-up to this book. Nevertheless, I think this is an important book for people to read as they consider decluttering, downsizing, or otherwise reducing the excess things they own in favor of living more simply.

i've had this book for years and i never get tired of it. i love diving into this book and getting a small dose of the core values of each of these families cultures. this world is so intriguing to me and i often wonder what it would be like if i were born somewhere other than the U.S.

I'm pretty sure I selected used good and I would not classify the book I received as this. It's a paperback which is fine and the cover is in good condition as well as the pages but the sewn binding is very loose. I'm trying to use it in my classroom and I have to warn every child that touches it too please be careful so the pages don't fall out. Disappointed.

This is an older book, but the photography teaches such a lesson about materialism and human consumption.

This particular book is excellent- very vivid images that would be great talking points for adults or children of all ages. You should definitely purchase this book if you are looking for a visual way to understand life around the world. The premise is that the "average" family in each country is photographed with all of the possessions in their house- it is a brilliant idea and a fascinating look at life around the world.

The Lost City of Z (Movie Tie-In): A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon (Vintage Departures), by David Grann

Review

Praise for David Grann's The Lost City of Z"Suspenseful. . . . Rollicking. . . . Reads with all the pace and excitement of a movie thriller. . . . The Lost City of Z is at once a biography, a detective story and a wonderfully vivid piece of travel writing that combines Bruce Chatwinesque powers of observation with a Waugh-like sense of the absurd. Mr. Grann treats us to a harrowing reconstruction of Fawcett's forays into the Amazonian jungle, as well as an evocative rendering of the vanished age of exploration." --The New York Times"Breathtaking. . . . Grann brings Fawcett's remarkable story to a beautifully written, perfectly paced fruition. . . . Any writer who can breathe life into letters written by scientists in the early 1900s deserves more than a hat tip." --The Los Angeles Times"Thoroughly researched, vividly told. . . . Grann recounts Fawcett's expeditions with all the pace of a white-knuckle adventure story. . . . A thrill ride from start to finish." --The Washington Post"In a hyperconnected and exhaustively charted world, here is a revelation about wildness and the mad desire to plunge into it. . . . Unfathomably riveting. . . . Grann wildly delivers the goods."--GQ"Brilliant. . . . Impressively researched and skillfully crafted. . . . Grann makes abundantly clear in this fascinating, epic story of exploration and obsession, [that] the lethal attraction of the Amazon mystery remains strong."--The Boston Globe

I loved reading this book because of its diversity. You get a well rounded history from multiple accounts of the many cursed expeditions into the Amazon. The crazy men who dared to do it (both present and past), violent tribal peoples (though you understand why they're so hostile to foreigners), the nearly impassable Amazon terrain, the odd and bizarre creatures that reside their, and in the end, a plausible archaeologically based theory behind why people thought there was a large rich city once in the Amazon. Like all things, people's imaginations run wild, but the author also brings you back down the earth with the reality of the jungle which left me with the overall conclusion that these grandiose theories of a Lost City of Z were really just grand exaggerations of much more practical evidence of a fairly developed, but long lost, past civilization. Some people criticize the book for only getting to the final expedition at the very end of the book. But I believe this criticism is unwarranted. You can't just jump into the final expedition without getting the backstory and context of the people, place, and time. I feel the author did a marvelous job of jumping around and pacing the book, so that when you get to the final expedition, you're well versed in the context and prepared to understand why things went down the way they did.Fantastic read, and I shall keep this book as a permanent fixture in my collection. Too bad I only got it in paperback... dang.

I ordered this novel after reading "The Lost City Of The Monkey God: A True Story" by Douglas Preston. Several reviewers of Mr. Preston's book referred "The Lost City Of Z" as being quite a bit better and more true to what has been regarded as classic archaeology. After reading "Z" I have to agree with those reviewers. This novel is mainly concerned with the exploration of the Amazon region in the early 1900's, with the technology of boat motors, airplanes, and short wave radio just beginning to be utilized. "Monkey God" is set in today's time and the explorers have new and up-to-date technology available to help them locate and analyze the ruins that they were searching for. However, Douglas Preston's story feels more 'human' and draws you in from the descriptions of the various obstacles encountered and (sometimes) overcome. His first person descriptions of what he and his team went through take you right into the heart of their group. You encounter the rain, insects, snakes, diseases, and other hardships that they experience. It feels personal, actually uncomfortably personal, making it too easy to put yourself in their shoes and put their pain and discomfort on your own shoulders. Reading "Z" was like watching a National Geographic special. Reading "Monkey God" was like watching (and experiencing) the difficulties constantly encountered by participants on the TV show "Naked and Afraid".It took me a while to get into the rhythm of "The Lost City Of Z" because of the shifting perspectives and time frames. David Grann obviously did a lot of research and utilized many different resources in order to compile a lot of factual and interesting information pertinent to the travails of Percy Fawcett while searching for his 'holy grail'. Colonel Fawcett is to be commended for his drive, intelligence, and physical abilities in being able to challenge such difficult conditions over and over again. His accomplishments in helping to map previously unexplored regions are surprising and extremely admirable considering the myriad obstacles encountered.Unfortunately, while each has its place, "Z" reads more like a history book while "Monkey God" is a living and breathing adventure. Each to his own.

I found this book interesting in many ways. It was easy to read since it touched many subjects that are familiar to me. The book covers historic facts of the Victorian age and its influence in the world but specially South America and the countries of Bolivia and Brazil whose Amazonian region was and is difficult to explore or study. It is well balanced since the book covers many areas that help understand different points of view of previous times compared to present times. I found answers to questions that come up as you read this book. For instance, to refer to the tribes that populate the Amazonian forests as savages, made me question who is anyone to judge, specially after the atrocities of WWI, described in the book as well as all the inhuman spectacle of WW2. Also, it explains what was happening in the areas related to the fields he got to be involved in like archeology and the discovery of Machu Pichu which may have influenced him.Fawcett’s motivations could have been banal if they were glory or becoming famous but he showed an ethical position not usual in his time which was to approach the indigenous people in a non violent way, trying not to use arms and ordering to drop arms even if danger was felt. He would raise his hands and confront the Indians which gave him good results since he got to be treated as a sort of friend. This respectful behavior, considering the times, was something positive to take in account when trying to define Fawcett's personality which could show his humanity, something to learn from him. Now, consider that Indiana Jones is partly based in the real life of Percy Fawcett and P.F. is one of the characters of one of his movies; however, Indiana Jones had no problem in shooting for entertainment.Having lived in Bolivia and having done some exploration myself I may have a different take to this adventure. To start, one of Fawcett's motivation was as normal as to answer why people climb mountains, the answer is,” because it's there". I have done hiking going from La Paz at 12000 ft. above sea level to about 15000 ft. and then down to the tropics of Yungas which is the start of the Amazonian jungle all along an Inca road which was partly well preserved considering hundreds of years of use. After getting familiar with this subtropical region, it happened that I read The mines of King Salomon and this book, cited in Grann's book as well, inspired me to go farther. My plan was to go to an uncharted area in the forest called Madidi, which is a national park now. My motivation was just to see what no one else has seen. I was able to enlist two university friends who seemed interested but who back down at the last minute. Next year I tried again but I had a sudden back ache problem. Going back to the book, Fawcett's intentions may have been to attain fame by finding not El Dorado but something like Machu Pichu which was “found” in 1911. He visited Cusco and Tiahuanacu and was able to marvel at the achievements of these civilizations. But destiny put him in the Bolivian jungle with the aid of the British government, it wasn't something that he was looking for but that opened his eyes and his innate explorer spirit. Before I even finished reading this book I was compelled to read about the original source, Percy Fawcett's own words, compiled in a book “Lost trail, lost cities” by Brian Fawcett, his son. By reading it, I found out that in his first trip he was hired by the Bolivian government, P. Fawcett does not mention Brazil in the first expedition which was actually work. Now, there are historical details that are not clear. The border problem between Bolivia and Brazil was already established in 1903 after a short war between these two countries and the result was the annexation of the Acre, an area of 190,000 square Kilometers (75,000 sq mls), more than ¾ the size of UK. By the way, something that this book could have in next edition is a better map, the map of Bolivia is not clear. There are details in the Fawcett's book that could have been part of Grann's book or even the movie, like the moment when, after departing La Paz, one of many mules P.F. had, runs away and that was the mule that had the $£1000 in gold he received as part of the payment from the Bolivian government, an interesting historical detail, a “jingling treasure” in the saddle bags. However, Fawcett explains that the mule was brought back by local people who he rewarded. P .F. describes foreigners by name but there is no mention of Bolivian dignitaries with the exception of the president of Bolivia who was taking matters with his own hands and who knew these lands very well. The region next to the Brazilian border bears his name, Pando.“All who have lived in these lands and learned to know them fell captive to their irresistible charm”, Fawcett writes as part of his reflexions. Is this one of the motives he kept coming back?

Like any self-respecting English teacher, I take the threat of a book being plucked from its shelf seriously. Heck, I've lived it when a former fourth grade student admitted to me on last day of school that he had taken numerous copies of Philip Pullman's THE GOLDEN COMPASS throughout the year at his mother's request...I kept replacing the copy thinking that if it disappeared, at least it was being read. Ugh.That's why this title intrigued me. Knowing that Alan Gratz was wildly popular in my room thanks to his thought-provoking Refugee, I dove into it during the long winter break with a happy heart. I wasn't disappointed. Ban This Book will spark rich discussion about the First Amendment, civil disobedience, and learning to find your voice. After all, we should speak all "speak our mind, even if our voice shakes."'I was lucky. My parents would buy me any book I wanted if I asked them to. But not everybody's parents would do that. Not everybody's parents COULD do that. That's what libraries were for: to make sure that everybody had the same access to the same books everyone else did.'

I love children’s books. This book is now my most highly recommended book. I’m thinking 4th and 5th graders would get the most out of it. It is a story of a small school that has one “PTA president” that keeps insisting more and more books should be taken off the shelves of the school library. It about a little girl who lives with her mother and father and two little sisters in a small house....at times the only place she can find to read is the bathtub. When her favorite books start disappearing she decides to create the BBLL (Banned Books Locker Library). It’s full of fun and close calls. I read it aloud to my granddaughter....we laughed until we cried. It also provided great conversation at our Sunday dinner.

I have read a few Alan Gratz books and enjoyed them all, but Ban this Book is by far his best. This book has a lot of things going for it. It has a little African-American girl as the main character, the Banned Books Locker Library which is a form of student protest which has been encouraged in light of the Florida shootings, and well rounded characters. Even the antagonist of the book, who could have easily been made into a stereotypical villain, is fully fleshed out with her point of view being sympathized with. The best part of the book though is it is a reminder that school boards hold an enormous amount of power to decide what books will be available in the school library. If the wrong elements are influencing these school boards, books are going to be banned that shouldn't. What was especially interesting was that the kids come up with all these ridiculous reasons to ban books, all of which have been argued in real life. It makes you realize how lucky we are to have choice and for students to have choice in what they read.

I read "Ban This Book" over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. The story moves fast even though a lot of interwoven issues are dealt with. The characters are well-defined (so nice to read about intelligent, resourceful young people), the dialogue is snappy, the vocabulary is rich, and the plotline is dear to my heart. I gave my copy to a friend immediately and am about to buy another to send to my sister.

Outstanding! This book is working at three primary levels - a love letter to children's literature, a commentary on censorship, and the journey of a 4th grader to find her voice both at home and at school. This succeeds on all three levels. I highly recommend this book to parents/grandparents as well as teachers and school/public librarians.

I started reading this book last night & just finished it. What an INCREDIBLE story!!! It is now officially one of my Top 5 books of all time. Thank you Alan Gratz for creating an amazing storyline & genuine characters.

I read this book aloud to my 8 year old, and we both really enjoyed it. It presents several good issues in a child-accessible way through well-written prose. It also inspired my daughter to want to read several of the 'banned books' and to start her own locker library (the books have been read, she doesn't have a locker in third grade which has hindered her plans for a library but she's very optimistic about having one in middle school).

My students love this book
