Met expectations.
This is a highly entertaining piece, which left an overwhelming impression on me when I saw it in 1975. By turns hilarious and bleak, and sometimes both together, it achieves a poetic tragedy in performance which transcends the seedy bar and the deeply flawed characters Robert Patrick writes about. It's fascinating to see what these people have lived through and what it has led them to become. And doubly clever to set the action in a bar, a gregarious place where people go to meet and have fun, which only underlines the terrible loneliness of these character's lives. Despite the sordid past of most of them, they achieve tragic status by the end of the play.It also has some terrific audition speeches for actors. Only 4 star for me as I feel in places it's overwritten, and in performance could do with a bit of judicious pruning. But that's just me. Less is more.
a first rate characterization of the types who lived through the sixties. I found it on target and interesting.
Again...got just what I ordered. Thanks so much!
Excellent condition, use for stage good.
I have not read it, but it is exactly what I wanted. I have been wanting to order this book for years.
Saw this at the Studebaker in Chicago with Shelley Winters Farley Granger and Ann Wedgeworth. Excellent. And...I was sitting in the front row and Shelley looked great and had beautiful legs!
... If you do get a chance to read it... you will be amazed at the detailed characters built up by the long, uninterrupted monologues. There isn't a plot as such, its set in the early 70's and involves a group of 6 unrelated characters explaining their lives in the setting of a bar, looking back at the sixties and what it meant for them. The characters include a frustrated model obsessed with becoming a 'marilyn' like figure and a young alchoholic who works in underground theatre.Brilliant to read - and I think even better to see on stage, its a pity it hasn't been more widely acclaimed.Especially good if you have any auditions coming up because every scene is its own self contained monologue, and incredably naturalistic considering the monologue format.
