As Hosler himself says, there has been no other book like this one. This is the first book to focus entirely on the besieging of Acre, and it does a great job!Some critics say that Hosler tries too hard to Diminish the reputations of both Saladin and Philip while still clinging a bit hard to the legendary status of King Richard the Lionheart, but to me it was not that bad.Overall, this is a painful book to read because of its subject matter (a single 2-year siege), but the book itself is masterfully well-written, reads very smoothly, and ends at less than 200 pages of the primary text.

If you love medieval history this is the book for you. Well written and full of detail. I loved it! John Hosler brings history to life with this book.

I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but I found myself disappointed. Imagine taking a 100-year-old shoe box worth of clippings of "true crime" newspaper stories, more or less sorting them in order of perceived heinousness, and printing synopses and you more or less have this book.Such analytical/prescriptive passages as exist are facile and shallow. E.g. , bad people can kill a lot of people with semi-automatic weapons, let's ban them. Absolutely no reckoning with the Constitutional and practical complexities of the gun debate in America. No attempt to wrestle with the issue of how we handle the seriously mentally ill in the wake of the trend to de-institutionalization. It's analysis by bumper sticker.Admittedly, some of the anecdotes are interesting in and of themselves, hence the second star. But the book fails to deliver on its subtitle.

Engaging and fascinating from the very beginning! The New Evil grows in intensity with case studies that will give a chill down your spine. Even if you are a study in true crime, there are details about real life cases that you’ve never heard. Fully recommended to anyone interested in true crime, psychology, and the human condition. Well written and filled with details that make you feel like you are present as the crimes are being described. Not for the faint of heart. A true masterpiece!

I thought it was perfect to kick the book off with a horrific crime, lead us into learning the scales, and have at least one case to help illustrate each point of the scale to help readers understand the qualifications of each category.From there I read dozens of cases and played along guessing the categories along the way and checking my work.The book is a true crime delight; both terrifying and educational, my two favorite things!

I haven’t finished the book yet but so far I’m loving every word. I love true crime and the study of human behavior behind them. This book not only gives facts I’ve never heard before but also explains the reasons behind them. True crime lovers will appreciate this read. Follow Dr Brucato on IG. He’s awesome and interacts with his followers at the_new_evil

As a lover of true crime, serial killer knowledge and a criminal justice student, I found this book to be very informative and thorough. I found it captivating and hard to put down. Every time I read a little more, I find myself more knowledgeable about these psychopaths in the book. Highly recommend!

This book is incredibly engrossing and throughly fascinating. I am not usually one for true crime books, but everything about this book is enthralling and keeps those pages turning. If you have any interest in true crime, psychology, or the depths of depravity humans can reach, this is a MUST read.

Fascinating and gripping! I just began reading this book and I did not want to put it down. I'm intrigued by the true crime case details and hope I can continue to stomach the stories as I am sure they will intensify as the chapters go on. I look forward to diving in further.

Frightening but well written read! Do not read before bed, but be ready for insightful and descriptive stories of true evil. A+
