In this most unusual graphic novel for the youngest readers, or nonreaders as the case may be, there are three protagonists. The little yellow fish, the barracuda, and a large school of fish all have a tale to tell at the end of the day. The barracuda appears to be the biggest baddest fish in the sea, but wait! It all depends on how you perceive the story, how you want to read it. You can pretend to be any one of these fish, but each one has a different vantage point.This book definitely reminds of the choose your own ending tales as the reader can choose just how he or she wants to read this almost wordless graphic novel. The tale of this assortment of fish can be followed individually or can mingle with the others. It can be read from beginning to end or the panels can be read from top to bottom on each page. This undersea adventure is full of surprises, including the fact that there’s a mighty big surprise in store for the barracuda. The format of the tale is quite interesting as was the first in the series, BirdCatDog.The introductory material gives a few suggestions as to how to read the wordless tale. It all begins when we see the little yellow fish, the barracuda, and a school of fish starting just starting their day. All is calm until the barracuda begins to take a look around him, spotting the other fish in the sea. The barracuda’s eyes widen, his tail whirls around, and his jaws open wide so we can see those menacing rows of teeth. Just what will be in store for these fish? The full-color panels, by virtue of their basic background colors and appearance on the page, are easy to read. The artwork is sharp, vibrant, and fun.I definitely like the concept of three stories meshed into one, yet separate. The age range for FishFishFish is 5 to 9. The draw or intent of this beginning graphic novel will be for the nonreader or in the upper ranges, the reluctant one. The nonreader will learn the physical aspect of directional scanning, something important to the dyslexic child. This is a wordless picture book with a few comic speech bubbles at the beginning and end. It tells three stories in one. One can read the top panel across the book showing the story of a little yellow fish swimming all alone. The middle panel goes through the book showing a barracuda on the search for food. The bottom panel follows along with a school of fish who band together. You can also read each page top to bottom as the frames interact with each other as the various fish move up or down into another fish's panel. I'm not a big fan of wordless picture books and this doesn't really have a plot. But the illustration is cute and would appeal to young children or elementary age with an interest in marine life.
Lee Nordling just released another book....if you want your child to get a great msg and be able to see it all come together with cute pics these are the books for them.....colorful and inspiring...you will find yourself rooting for your favorite character :-) it is worth a look!!!
