About the Author

Gregory Boyle is the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, CA. Now in its 30th year, Homeboy traces its roots to when Boyle, a Jesuit priest with advanced degrees in English and theology, served as pastor of Dolores Mission Church, then the poorest Catholic parish in Los Angeles, which also had the highest concentration of gang activity in the city. Homeboy has become the largest gang-intervention, rehabilitation, and reentry program in the world, and employs and trains gang members and felons in a range of social enterprises, as well as provides critical services to thousands of men and women each year who walk through its doors seeking a better life. Father Boyle has received the California Peace Prize, the James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year Award, and the University of Notre Dame’s Laetare Medal. Last year, while boarding a flight from the East Coast to the West Coast, I walked down the aisle of the airliner wearing a sweatshirt with the words “Homeboy Industries” emblazoned across my chest. Another passenger, seeing my sweatshirt (or my gray hair and beard) asked, “Are you Father Greg?”To which I replied, “No, just one of his admirers.”In Barking to the Choir Gregory Boyle rekindles the admiration of multitudes for the work he and Homeboy Industries does in getting Los Angeles gang members off the streets and into jobs where they can work to provide for themselves and their families. The title, Barking at the Choir, reflects some of the mixed metaphors Boyle has heard over the years.The humor in the book is one of Boyle’s trademarks, as in his previous book, Tattoos on the Heart. But the humor in Barking at the Choir is just a vehicle for Boyle to tell the tragic, almost hopeless stories of people trapped in lives of abuse, crime, violence, incarceration, and often premature, violent death. It also puts the spotlight on society’s mistaken estimation of gang members as incorrigible and worthless.Barking to the Choir would be a heartbreaking read were it not for the success stories Boyle tells: about how youth and young adults find purpose and redemption (in the broadest sense) from having a reason to get up in the morning, somewhere to go, and something to do. Homeboy Industries is the largest, most successful gang rehabilitation and reentry program in the world.Barking to the Choir is also a platform on which Boyle addresses social causes, such as police abuse and the death penalty. After nearly 30 years spent working in Boyle Heights, one of the most gang-ridden neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Boyle has a better-than-average idea about what works and what makes things worse.Boyle was diagnosed with leukemia about 15 years ago. That reality may be why kinship and community—radical kinship—are such predominant themes in this book. It tells stories that are ultimately uplifting, stories of individuals and situations almost impossible to imagine. The occasional appearance of four-letter words (in context) might put off some readers. But the stories of hope in otherwise hopeless situations are worth that minor inconvenience. The stories might even inspire some of us to be more involved in trying to solve some of the intractable problems in our communities.

Barking to the Choir ought to be required reading for every Church, School and Religious community- actually EVERY community. It establishes the benchmark for whether we are living in the type of community which God intends. What is most inspiring is that the stories from the book are living accounts of a day at Homeboy Industries and the parish community of Delores Mission. What is most inspiring is that Fr. Greg maintains an incredible sense of humor. Pablo Neruda states "laughter is the language of the soul." Truly, you won't find a place where laughter and the soul is more at home.

Many of us learned of the ministry of Fr. Greg Boyle through his best-selling book “Tattoos on the Heart” in which he shared the story of Homeboy Industries. I enjoyed “Tattoos” for a number of reasons. One, I always love to read accounts of people who make important and positive changes in our world (Fr. Boyle would downplay this aspect of his ministry and will be the first to tell you he believes the young people he has worked with have rescued him rather than the other way around). Second, at the time I read “Tattoos” I was beginning a new ministry and wanted everything to be done yesterday, and Fr. Boyle would often paraphrase Teilhard de Chardin who spoke of things happening in “God’s slow time.” For me, the book was an engaging read with many spiritual nuggets for reflection.“Barking to the Choir” is somewhat different in its approach from “Tattoos on the Heart” and its purpose is not to pick up where “Tattoos” left off. Fr. Boyle uses the stories of many of the people he has encountered and situations that have happened to him at Homeboy Industries, as a priest at Dolores Mission, and in his prison ministry to respond to the challenges of our time and the negative rhetoric that is so prevalent. In a time where the dialogue in our country has been bitter, people are polarized, and snap judgments are common, Fr. Boyle challenges us to look beyond people we see from the outside and see more of what we have in common. He does this mainly by sharing anecdotes which can to lead to reflection. While it may seem as if he is responding to the current political climate, most of the stories in this book would have been timely if we had not had situations such as Charlottesville in the summer of 2017 and the President referring to African countries in a derogatory way. Fr. Boyle shares the stories, in some cases adds some commentary, but in general allows the stories to speak for themselves. He often uses the actual terminology of his “homeboys” and makes you see the situation form their point of view. It’s as if Fr. Boyle wants you to see the person of Jesus Christ I the stories he shares and hopes that what is easy to do when reading from a page can be applied in real life.For those of us who have to preach on a regular basis, this book is a gift with many great tales that will be excellent homily/sermon starters. It could also be a great resource for teachers. It is a great selection for book clubs, especially faith-based book clubs, and can be of use for people in social justice ministries. No matter why people read it, “Barking to the Choir” has the potential to widen our perspectives and allow us to see people in a different way. I am giving “Barking to the Choir” five stars, and yes, it is well deserved, but the five stars may be out of guilt. I’ve used so many of the stories in this book as well as the story of “Tattoos on the Heart” in so many homilies, Bible Study session, RCIA classes, and with young people, I owe Fr. Boyle at least five stars!

Boyle will quickly motivate you to move beyond awareness, compassion and service all the way to kinship with those who have little hope. This may be one of his best stories: “Lety, a homegirl who has been through the wringer and then back again, sits snug up to the front of my desk. I grab her hands and pull her as close as I can across the top of my desk. “Lety,” I begin, “I swear to you, IF I get to heaven and you’re not there. . . I’m not stayin’.”

Jonathan B. Baker, a former Director of the Bureau of Economics at the Federal Trade Commission, is a Research Professor of Law at American University. He has also worked as the Chief Economist of the Federal Communications Commission, a Senior Economist on the Council of Economic Advisers, a Special Assistant in the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, and an antitrust lawyer in private practice. I cannot think of one book that has more influence on me than Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is a book that I once read at least once a year and it never failed to fill my mind with hope and ideas. I totally disagree with those who consider Nietzsche to be hard, stern, and without hope. I find nothing but hope in the works of Nietzsche. He deepest desire was to see humans remove the yoke of any oppressive ideologies which hindered thoughts and imagination. My initial reading of Zarathustra was very disappointing. I was not ready for the very stylized language he used but subsequent reading made me look beyond the style and see the thoughts behind them and then yielded the wisdom beneath. I make no claims to entirely understand Nietzsche but someone who dropped out before reaching high school I believe I have a fairly good grasp of his overall principles. His ideas are not so abstract that only scholars can understand them. I have now read most of his major works and consider him the single greatest influence on my own life and the perceptions of various institutions. As an atheist I was naturally drawn to his hostility towards most forms of organized religions---the exception for Nietzsche being Buddhism--but he was not grim or dour about this and always championed the "yay-saying" and discouraged the "nay-saing". His words can come across as a bit hard and cold but he felt he was in a desperate battle with a force that was robbing humanity of it's humanity and there was no sense mincing words about the consequences. He would have hated the Nazis. They were everything he despised about the regressive nature of humanity. The were devoid of all hope and their perverse use of the philosophy would have sickened him. This is a book that is still very valid and vital to the health of humanity. It should be read and reread.

A very good and dense book. I don't know if it was the prose, the translation, or the age of language in the text, but I found myself reading a few passages multiple times to really understand it. But all-and-all, a great read.People have spent decades writing long explanations and commentary on the book, so I'll simply say that much of it I could relate to my own challenges and experiences in life and that its message resonated with me.

This is a good, straightforward and fairly literal translation, with helpful notes -- not too many, but useful. I much prefer it to the work of Walter Kaufmann which has for a long time been standard fare for university reading. Walter was better than the Nazified edition with the author's sister to speak for him. But there is a great deal of self-important nonsense by Mr. Kaufmann in his edition. Here we have a fine translation that may well become the new university standard, at least it is for me.

I believe Nietzsche saw his "Zarathurstra" as his magnum opus, the artistic-expressive summary of his beliefs.It is a wonderful book, and anyone who has read his other works will find that "Zarathustra" really does synthesize and summarize those other works.The challenge with "Zarathustra" and Nietzsche's other works, is the depth and breadth of his experience and scholarship. The more I read his works, the more I realize I miss...and to some degree must miss! I have a limited background in Classical studies, but not to the extent Nietzsche did. As another for-instance - I do not speak or read French or Italian, and so I can only analytically understand Nietzsche's statements about the cadences of those languages, and their connection to their local habitats, and the way they both reflect and influence their speakers' demeanors. Oh well! Something to shoot for, for me, I guess, to learn Spanish and French....and, German?!This is a very good translation with good end-notes. There are some references I think the translator missed, but that's ok.

Nietzche dances along the edge of schizophrenia, which a Horrobin has noted is HUMAN WRIT LARGE.There is nothing exceptional in normalcy, by definition, therefore only madmen can be geniuses.I Am well acquainted with schizophrenia, and Nietzche's work offers an insight into their intense inner world.He was spurned by the sane, not for loving too little, but for loving too intensely.You will wait in vain for the promised superman to emerge, for this is a story of his gestation, not his birth. We await his birth wondering who he is; and what his nature.Perhaps this is an overhang from Nietzche's monotheists past, with all their talk of "The Return of the Messiah"Us Vanatru, one the other hand, have our Sacred and eternal Wheel of Life.

Not the best Seuss. Fox in Socks is 100 times better. This one it's as if Dr. Seuss was phoning it in with his rhymes. "Pocket? Umm, Wocket yeah, moving on." My 2 year old was done with it after one reading, and to be honest, I think I agree. There's other books worth your time and money -- skip this and get the other Seuss books.

I read a bunch of reviews saying that the made up words were a bad idea for children learning to read. I have to disagree.1. The made up words are actually the names of the different creatures.2. Hearing rhyming words is great for young readers. That's why the Dr. Seus books are so highly recommended. And many studies have proved that the concept of rhyming has nothing to do with weather the word is made up or not.3. What I really like is that the book can even be a little challenge at first, for some readers, because they have to actually read the unfamiliar word while relating it to the familiar word to figure out how the new word should be pronounced.

We will definitely be ordering a couple more of these. It is my baby's favorite book so she's already worn it out quite a bit. Love the story and the book is the perfect size and durability for a baby/tot.

I am not really sure if made up words are great to present to a toddler that has a 20 word max vocabulary, but my little one sure loves this book. I guess she even recognizes at a very young age that it is pretty amusing. It is one of her favorite books right now. I am a huge fan of the board book version because she takes this to bed with her & it has bite marks all over it & still functions well!

Book is pretty clearly a knock off. Some pages are missing, others are out of order, and even some words are changed from the original.

This is an abbreviated version and not all of the pages were there. I bought this for a classroom activity and all the kids pointed out how this wasn't the full story. It is especially missing the ending, which was a huge part of our activity. Very disappointed in this!

It's a good book, but its not the full version, also it is physically quite small.

Our toddler loves being read to, and at his age (under 2 years) a book with rhythm really makes for a fun experience for him since obviously he can't read himself. This is a great one for when he's in a lap, sitting quietly and listening.

I purchased this book because I own several other Dr. Suess board books, including Mr. Brown can Moo, Hop on Pop, the Foot Book and The Shape of Me. I like all of these books, because they contain simple rhymes, colorful pictures and are great for helping a baby learn language.I was a bit disappointed with There's a Wocket, because most of the words are made up. I don't mind a few made up words, but all the characters in this book are made up (there's a nooth grush on my toothbrush?)I would recommend waiting until your child is old enough to no longer need board books, and purchase the full version. I'm sure older children who are already talking would love the silly made up creatures & rhymes.

Fantastic read. I so relate to this book. My husband and I married at 17/20 years old respectively and not because "we had to" , but because we were in love. So I definitely get how head over heels in love feels! We just celebrated our 31st anniversary! (Still head over heels for that guy!) This book shows that even great marriages need daily work, even when there is nothing "wrong" with it. Sort of like a maintenance plan. I would recommend this book to any married couple- newlyweds and soon to be wed couples included. Start strong and stay strong is what I get from this book- always putting God first! He can and does bless this union of mine and I love how Mrs. Lowe puts it out there for readers to see! Keep the books coming!!!!

WHAT A GREAT BOOK! The journey of marriage told by Mia and Bode was just wonderful. This story was so open and honest, I loved it. This book spoke to me, it made me think, feel, laugh, cry and most of all it opened my eyes. I have always considered myself happily married and I really am, but this book opened my eyes to another level of thinking about our marriage. ( I put "my" and changed it to OUR) of 27 years. Our love at first sight, the infertility, the happy parts and the sad parts. Now my favorite part is the to have and to hold. This is a great book for anyone to read, no matter if you are just married, going to be married or been married for a long time.thank you so much for this book.

Too many times romance novels get wrapped up in the boy getting the girl and then they end. This is the story of real love and the happily ever after that isn't necessarily happy or lasting ever after. Thank you, thank you, Mrs. Lowe for a novel that carries us through the trials, truth, and often harsh reality of the ups and downs of marriage, and thank you for the sweet reminder that marriage is a bond like no other that can be full of friendship, fun, and romance. May we all seek to have and to hold like Bode & Mia.

Wow! This is a must read for anyone who has been married for a long while. The story of Mia and Bode's marriage falling apart after 20 plus years brought about many emotions for me as it did for them in the storyline. The author has shown us the stages of marriage. The unbelievable happiness in the beginning, the joy of babies, the intimacy shared. But along with all the wonderfulness of it comes everyday routines, chores, jobs and each having their own issues. For Bode, his dreams are not coming true. He dislikes his job and has let depression take over and it is affecting his life. He doesn't feel like Mia cares anymore and he feels he has lost her. It was so easy for me to feel for both Mia and Bode and the emotions they are going through as the story unfolds. The hard part comes when they work to get love and their marriage back on track. This story just hits so many emotional buttons about marriage and relationships. The author has nailed it and once again I take a lot from one of her books. I so love how faith plays such a pivotal roll throughout the story. The author has also given us some great secondary characters to love especially the neighbor Maury. Thank you T.I. Lowe for yet another thought provoking book that is also entertaining to read.

Wow this was quite a story on a marriage about to go wrong and what it took to save it. My favorite part would have to be when the couple get a copy of the marriage vows from their pastor and check off each vow as they do them. To Have and to Hold, thru sickness and health, etc. the Christmas scene was very emotional and well told by the author. The intimate scenes between husband and wife - perfect. I'm glad I read this and look forward to the next one.

Overall this book is phenomenal.I do wish however, that he fleshed in a few details out a bit more.For example, one of the Commandments is don't work for a company that violates your values.I would say the mass majority of companies will violate your values in one way or another. So I wish this was expanded a little more. I also know how difficult it is to get in keep a job in the film industry. So having examples of people who quit because of their values and were hired again quickly may have been helpful to read - but I don't know if that's anyone's reality. I know there is an element of faith in a decision like that, but there are many examples in the Bible where God calls people under terrible leadership; and that person is a major influence under that leadership.

 I had been praying about how to take my acting career to the next level and was looking for resources to guide me. However, I was unable to find someone from the business side of the entertainment industry to give me insight on how things really work in the industry. The Hollywood Commandments by DeVon Franklin did all of that and more.The knowledge shared in this book can benefit anyone who has a desire to step into the fullness of who God created them to be. And something I really liked was that you don't have to be in the entertainment industry or in Hollywood to benefit from reading this book.DeVon generously shares years of experience and insight like a coach/friend/mentor/big brother - and backs everything up with scripture. This book is encouraging, insightful and impactful - you won't regret reading it. I have been recommending this to all of my friends and pre-ordering copies one by one to send to my friends - as my budget allows. I'm going to read it again!

This is a really good book. I have bought over five copies for work and bought the audiobook for myself since I'm always on the go. We keep them on the bookshelf at our youth shelter and youth drop-in centers. After one staff read the book in their down time, they incorporated it into the life skills group we teach daily. The key part that shows how powerful the wisdom is in this book is the staff did this on their own. I didn't suggest it, and didn’t recommend for them to even read the book. They did this on their own, and we started to see the young men did the same thing. If you're casual and looking to sit outside, you won't want to randomly end up in a vineyard with $80 tastings and crystal chandeliers. I've been to napa and Sonoma before I bought hadbook and it can be really confusing. This is a FUN little word search book! I love the holiday ones! They make super gifts for loved ones (but I kept this one for me! The only Easter Basket baby we have right now is too young for word searches so ~ Yeah ME!) But in a few years, this will be perfect for her for a goody in her basket! So I hope this will be available for many years to come! This would be a PERFECT size for Christmas for stocking stuffers...HINT, HINT!!! I'm already about 1/2 way thru the book, I don't get to work on them as much as I would like but it is nice to always have one of Mr. Timmerman's books around for when I can! If you have not done your Easter Goody shopping yet, this little book is perfect for any age that enjoys word searches!

I like the size of the book, easier to take with me to work while waiting for appointments.The large print is easy on the eyes.Who knew there were so many words connected to Easter!You won’t be disappointed in this or other word search books by Mr Timmerman.

Great sized book, half the size of regular books, with simple puzzles. Perfect for adding to a child's Easter Basket and a great size for the ride to Grandma's. It would also be a nice, large print for elderly people with poor vision and easy enough to not strain the eyes but give a sense of accomplishment at quickly completing a puzzle. Sit back and enjoy another winner from this author.

I love word searches. The size of this book, while keeping the larger print, makes it easy for kids and adults to complete. The shorter word list (20 per puzzle) allow you to finish a page in one sitting. It's a good choice for young readers.

A fun size book on a seasonal topic. Great for kids and adults alike. From family to Spring to secular to religious-themed topics, this easy-to-carry book will provide plenty of entertainment this Easter season. The puzzles are smaller than in his other books so faster to do but still lots of puzzling fun for anyone.

I was expecting more given my many books by this Author. As a senior citizen the size of the letters are good. These are definitely geared to children IMO. The puzzles are simplistic with the words incredibly easy to find. Take 5 minutes and complete a puzzle does nothing to challenge the mind. Very disappointed.
