If you favor mysteries and thrillers full of surprises, you’ll love The Crow Girl by the Swedish writing team that publishes under the name Erik Axl Sund. No matter how shrewd and analytical you might be, I predict that you won’t figure out who’s who and what’s what until at least close to the end of this staggeringly complex novel. And, unless you read at a blistering pace, this is not a book you’ll finish at one sitting: the hardcover edition runs to 784 pages. To say that I enjoyed this novel would be misleading. At times it’s gruesome beyond belief. And I found the constant use of long Swedish place names distracting. Yet the writing is devilishly clever. It’s difficult to put the book down. In fact, I found it impossible. It’s difficult to exaggerate just how complicated this story is. It’s a tale about pedophilia, serial murder, unhappy marriages, dissociative identity disorder, a fundamentalist Christian sect in Lapland, the Great Famine in the Ukraine, the Holocaust, and Swedish police procedures. Got that? No? I understand. I could never have imagined a single story linking all these themes. The Crow Girl opens like so many other crime stories. The mutilated body of a young immigrant boy is discovered, and Detective Superintendent Jeanette Kihlberg from the Stockholm police is assigned to the case. But neither the police chief nor the prosecutor who both have authority over her will provide her with the necessary resources. Then the bodies of two other young boys are found nearby. Evidence links the three murders, so Kihlberg is faced with tracking down a serial killer, on her own time when necessary. To gain insight into the psychopathology of serial murderers, the Superintendent enlists the help of a brilliant psychologist, Sofia Zetterlund. It soon develops that both women are stuck in unhappy marriages, so you’ll quickly begin to wonder where that will lead. And that’s only the first of a long list of complications and surprises that come to light again and again in this masterful tale.

''The Crow Girl'' is an extremely dark and depressing crime novel written by the Swedish duo of Jerker Eriksson and HÃ¥kan Axlander Sundquist (Erik Axl Sund is their pen name) which deals with the absolutely horrible aspects of human deviation as well as its effects in the lives of both offenders and victims. This book, in fact, contains three separate novels, the ''Victoria Bergman'' trilogy, and is quite a ''heavy'' read as it extends more than 700 pages (!). The writers emphasize mental illness and child abuse and in their world, there is not even a glimpse of goodness, hope or redemption for any of the central characters. Personally,i found the book hard to digest in many instances and i cannot recommend it to those who are faint at heart. Having in mind the above, ''The Crow Girl'' is a quality crime/ psychological thriller novel with an interesting and suspensful story with a lot of -shocking- plot twists. If you are a fan of Scandi-Noir you should check it immediately.

Be prepared.....this was very dark......have never read anything like this....but you will have to finish it to get the full story...sometimes I just had to put it down...and read something else.....but then I would pick it up again....just had to know how it was going to finish off...much more intense then "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo".....MUCH more graphic and many, many gasps, and "OMG"s from the reader......go for it.....I DARE you !!

I purchased this in audible. I enjoyed it, although the combination of many characters and characters with several personalities made it difficult for me to follow at times. Each chapter followed a different person, and sometimes a chapter would be a flashback. However, it sucked me in and I looked forward to listening every day (it's a long book). The narrator on the audible version is excellent. But I made it to chapter 248 and the audible messed up and I could not go any further. In order to find out what happens, I had to buy the kindle edition because it really does make you care about these people!

Sure, there were some stomach churning imagery, and yes they did involve children, but it wasn't so much of the book that it was unbearable. The story kept you guessing and stressed out from start to finish. Just when you thought you knew what was going on, you're wrong. On the gross scale I would say it's somewhere between a Gillian Flynn novel and Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho, so if you can deal with that, you might like this book.

One of the best crime thrillers I've read in a long time. It keeps you guessing and is beautifully written. I couldn't put it down. Hoping for more books from this duo. I've actually reread it twice and it has to be really good for me to do that. I love the exploration of the human psyche in this book. So insightful.

I was excited to get this book because I like crime dramas and really liked that it was compared in genre to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The book begins with a grisly discovery of a mummified body of a child. The child abuse and pornography that is depicted in the book is shocking and never lets up. The character development of Sofia Zetterlund as a psychologist with demons of her own is interesting but predictable. The story is complex and delves perhaps too much into the psychology and inner thoughts of the characters. After a while, I just wanted the story to move on. I just lost my reader's momentum not quite halfway through the book. I honestly had to set it aside for the time being.....it is certainly the most disturbing thing I have ever read. I will get back to it, though, because I have so much time invested in reading what I have so far. I have read that the plot takes some interesting twists and turns, and so I will finish the book. But for now, I simply cannot do it. This novel is nearly 800 pages long.

This book was an amazing read !!!! There are so many twists ! I loved it. It was worth the long read and if you like reading about mystery, mental illnesses, trauma, and suspense... then this is it!!! I loved it.
