I was an Iditarider in 2014 and this year we are heading to Nome for the finish, so I guess that qualifies me as a fan. I have been following Martin Buser for years and always felt he was a class act. This book only confirms my opinion of him. He is a talented musher who puts his dogs first and works his own tail off. It is easy to understand why he is such a fan favorite.This was a delight to read and full of interesting information and stories. The beginning focuses on his early life and his journey into sled dog racing. The bulk of the book (probably 2/3s of it) is broken into chapters, each focusing on a particular Iditarod race. All of the chapters are interesting and informative as it allows a glimpse into what happens on the trail and just how difficult an undertaking this is. Some of the stories will make you laugh (there were a couple of times I was laughing so hard I practically cried) and other stories will tug at your heartstrings. One of the most impactful tales related to the fire that threatened his kennel and the lengths he went to in order to save it and his dogs. My respect for him only increased after reading this. If you ever see him interviewed, he usually has a twinkle in his eye --- it is apparent from the book that the twinkle provides a clue into a man who has a mischievous streak and enjoys a prank or two along the way.I am so happy to have had the opportunity to read this and highly recommend it to fans of his or anyone interested in sled dogs and sled dog racing
I had just attended a seminar and Martin Buser was the speaker. I found him to be much better as a speaker and his personality is awesome, much better than reading his book. However I always appreciate books by those awesome individuals who run dogs.
