Before the 'Dilbert' series found its stride in mercilessly skewering modern corporate culture, cartoonist Scott Adams let his imagination hang out more and mixed in a wide variety of other topics into his strips. Observational comedy gets added to social commentary and a lot of general weirdness. The gleefully insane cover image captures that vibe perfectly. This book's totally worth picking up if the idea of a 'The Far Side' meets 'The Office' blend of humor sounds appealing, which it seriously should.
Shave the Whales / 0836217403"Shave the Whales" is what I consider to be the third "real" Dilbert collection, i.e. containing only cartoons that haven't appeared in any other published Dilbert collection and not one of the "re-collections" or "theme collections" that Adams is so fond of releasing, although of course my counting may be a touch off.This collection contains strips from fairly early in Adams' career, and though several of them are quite funny, I'm not sure how well they hold up over time. There's a strong reliance on puns (as if the title "SHAVE the Whales" didn't clue you in on that), and a lot of Russian and/or Gorbachev jokes that seem very dated on rereading these strips. Some of Dilbert's adventures on blind dates, too, don't hold up as well as the more recent strips, and it's probably a good thing that Adams' moved away from his "one defining characteristic" shtick with the female characters in the strip and decided to let them become a little more nuanced.I love the Dilbert strips in general and if you're really interested in collecting them all, this volume is a must for a home library, but if you're really just a fan of the office strips and the established characters, you may consider giving this early volume a pass.~ Ana Mardoll
While this is the 4th Dilbert book, it is the 2nd book of strips from the newspaper, following "Always Postpone Meetings With Time-Wasting Mornons". The strips in this book are from the end of 1989 through mid-1990. Some characters of note introduced in this book are the Garbage Man (who is a member of MENSA) and Ratbert. Also, the famous fictional country of Elbonia makes it's first appearance. People will see characters that look a lot like Wally but aren't called that as Wally wasn't established yet. The humor picks up with more business related strips and the artwork tightens up a bit. A good book for laughs and light reading.
I have never been disappointed with anything written by Scott Adams and this is no exception. This is a collection of some of the older strips featuring our office hero Dilbert dishing out some sarcasm and much-loved puns. If you are a Dilbert fan like I am, this is a must have for your collection. I laughed hysterically and then laughed some more; I shared it with my friends and they laughed; then I silently cheered as Dilbert sticks it to the PHB as all of us wish we could. Hats off to Scott!
Just as funny as all the other hillarious Dilbert books. Gte this one to start your Dilbert Collection or make it bigger. This book os a must read just like all of the other dilbert books so BUY IT
This is another great Dilbert book by Scott Adams. It was funny and I loved it. You should get it.
