good story
I'm frustrated with this series, but considering I'm still thinking about what i hope happens in the next book a day later, I will read the next book to see if the characters grow beyond this stalemate they find themselves. This book's mystery was rather straight forward, but the larger arch has me intrigued by the next big bad.Nelly/Rose's character does get some closure about her family's tragic end by investigating their murder, but she's definitely still flailing.***spoilers***Once again, she has gained very few skills even though she desires to be an bold investigator who puts herself in dangerous situations. Does she have s a death wish? Why did she not ask that dashing lieutenant for some hand-to-hand combat training or at least check the gun! The whole suspecting innocent people with no proof is getting old too. Her amateur, "just lucky, I guess" sleuthing persona would be more acceptable if the mysteries were a only a setting for her growth and relationship building. But, Neely is also emotionally disconnected to everyone she knows. That's not surprising, considering the event that she spends so much time thinking about in this book. The author harped on needing closure to the point that Nelly could barely even hear people speak over the tumult of her thoughts. But with that in mind, I'm surprised the author has completely ignored that her brother, who she had spent so much energy to find, betrayed her in a twisted game, ending in his apparent suicide. It would be more compelling to understand her manipulations and coldness of we knew she was becoming self-aware and began to move beyond her wounds. Regardless, she has no real relationships even at the end is the book, though people attempted it and she thinks about what she should do in order to connect.I was partially attracted to this series when I saw the potential for mentorship leading to partnership, so this book was particularly disappointing. I still see her eventually being with Achilles, but only if they both learn to get over their their self-made isolation.If I don't see some major introspection and growth in the next book, I will no longer read this author. I can't stand stagnant protagonists.
I found myself losing patience with Rose/ Nellie during this book. I was always a little iffy on her taking Rose's identity but to say that her aunt "encouraged" her to take up the mantle of Rose again was absolute bull. I also found her confidence bordering on arrogance and self-delusion. I skipped to the end to confirm my guess of the assassin was correct.I did like some of the other characters, but the ones we spent the most time with were mostly one-dimensional. I might stop reading this series because I cannot find myself rooting for Nellie.
This book definitely deserves to be read. The writing is good and the characters very easily relatable. Enjoy this Continuing story.
I could not put this book down!! The author did a great job of presenting the mystery and the clues. The details made logical sense and the mystery was not tied up in a few paragraphs. It was a satsfying pay-off. I can not wait o read the next book.
I found the book Interesting and at times confusing!And I she was way to independent and so sweet at times,..?.I wish that it had ended differently with hope for Maybe aRomance!
