an enormously enlightening & perfectly organized exposition of the many complicated facets of the "yasukuni problem," about which very few people, despite their strong opinions, have accurate understanding. we may remedy that here. the author skillfully untangles the many yasukuni threads historically, religiously & socially in a well written & fascinating story. her system is clear & precise, a masterful achievement considering the complexity of the issue & the vast amount of research done on its every aspect. i cannot recommend this book highly enough to academics & laypeople alike.it is therefore quite tragic that the U of H, of all places!, has apparently chosen to discontinue printing kanji characters in its texts. they did it in the old days when the kanji had to be inserted on specially-designed wee plates; their refusal to do it now when everything is easily done digitally is unconscionable. ditto for the photos, few enough god knows, which look like they were xeroxed thru a couple sheets of kleenex. how much are we paying for this book??none of the above is the author's fault, of course, & no doubt she was as unhappy about this as the rest of us. but regardless, she should also have put in more japanese vocabulary, even in roman letters, for the many words & phrases so crucial to the yasukuni issue. for example, "enshrinement." altho she explains concretely what this entails, it is such a hot-button issue that the japanese terminology is vital both to further research and to argument. E-J dictionaries provide a variety of definitions, from "celebrate" to "bury," none of which quite work, & are further complicated by the figurative usage. this is not just picking lint here. much more japanese is needed here to clarify further an issue already so dangerously misunderstood.but there is only one in-depth study on yasukuni, & we should all be thankful that this is it. it is just about as good as it gets. it will make historians remember why we chose history in the first place, by the positive chills it sends up the spine.

Excellent book that I think is a book everyone should read. Very in depth analysis about Yasukuni and its relation to the memories of those affected by the shrine, it's belief, and it's history
(Copy purchased from Amazon.ca (Canada)) Yasukuni Shrine is essentially a religious place, closely related to the idea of “Sonnoâ€, that is, “Revere the Emperorâ€. The book discusses in substantial detail its history and the historical and contemporary ramifications of its belief, tracing the shrine’s origin to the military rituals of the Choshu feudal domain (now Yamaguchi prefecture) and the loyalist thoughts of the Mito domain. The Mito thoughts also provided the Shinto basis of the shrine in which all the enshrined individuals became Shinto gods. The author puts forth open-minded ideas of constructively interpreting the representations of the shrine of today. The book furnishes me with lots of new information and insights, among which are:(1) With enshrinement and upon becoming a Shinto deity – “eirei†or noble spirit – the individual’s wrongful deeds, if any, while living will all be cleaned away. (page 92-93)(2) The majority of enshrinement of the perished combatants in the last world war was done after August 1945. (page 138-142) Yasukuni Shrine is not unfamiliar to me, since I have been there as a casual visitor – not as a tourist – numerous times, the most recent visit being in spring 2015. Usually I somewhat feel uneasy while in there. This is easily understandable given I am ethnic Chinese. My idea is that since the end of WWII, the thinking of the world has radically changed. Aggressive invasions for the sake of territorial self-aggrandizement are now regarded as definitely unacceptable, although in human history before 1945 this kind of action would not raise any eyebrows. Imperialism is now a dirty word. The Yasukuni stance of justifying the Asia-Pacific War thus naturally arouses serious concern in places which bore Japan’s thrust.And I do not feel that Japan's neighbours are asking any Japanese people of today to bear the responsibility for their forebears. The neighbours are mainly asking Japan to acknowledge what happened 70 or 80 years ago, without keeping on neutralising history and painting a picture that looks good to the Japanese themselves alone. As I understand, the British, for instance, do not justify for themselves the selling of opium to China who then had to sign the Treaty of Nanking of 1842. In Chapter 6 a description of the exhibits in the Yushukan military museum in the shrine is given (page 173-179). May I also add that near the exit area of the exhibition hall there stands a rare stone tablet with the kanji “Nankai Jinja†(South Sea Shrine) inscribed on it? This tablet was returned to Japan by the British Forces in Hong Kong in the late 1970s or 1980. Originally it stood in front of the torii gate at the Shinto shrine of that name on Hong Kong island. The shrine, now non-existent, was completed around 1942 for commemorating the perished combatants of the Second China Expedition Fleet during the battle of Hong Kong in December 1941. The name tablet was at one corner in the cafeteria in Yasukuni Shrine when I first saw it while having my meal there in September 1982, a time when Japan's neighbours were at odds with Japan over her textbook revision. I venture to say that the South Sea Shrine was an overseas extension of the Yasukuni worship system.
